Demon-Slaying Manor was known throughout the Homeland as the seat of the campaign to eradicate demons. Set amid green hills and clear waters, it now stood on the brink of destruction.
More than a dozen powerful demons had appeared at once. Caught off guard, Demon-Slaying Manor could barely withstand them, even though its people were the most skilled demon slayers in the entire Homeland.
"Quick! Strike it with the Immortal's flying sword! Don't let it into the main hall!"
Above the manor, something shaped like a dark cloud pierced a layer of light. The barrier had been cast by a manor resident holding a mirror. In the past, the treasure had only ever had to defend against two demons at most. Now it faced ten, far beyond its limit.
"Go!"
Dozens of yards away, a lean middle-aged man on a rooftop heard the shout and hurriedly turned his finger. A blue-green flying sword that had been moving and attacking at his direction changed targets midair. Its sharp blade flashed toward the cloudlike demon that had broken through.
In an instant, the sword plunged into the center of the dark cloud. The cloud shuddered several times, then dissolved into the air.
Every noncombatant hiding near the main hall felt a surge of relief. At last, a demon had been destroyed. But the manor expert controlling the sword suddenly shouted, "Run! It's not dead!"
He had reached that conclusion almost the instant the cloud disappeared. Unfortunately, the demon was faster.
