The creature in the cocoon slightly lifted one eyelid.
Azrael instantly felt dizzy and disoriented. Everything around him seemed to dim, shrouded in shadow.
An intense hunger welled up from its belly.
He felt the nutrients in his body gradually draining away. His stomach was utterly empty, containing nothing but cold air. His blood vessels shriveled from lack of nourishment, his fat rapidly burned away, and moisture fled from between his lips and teeth.

Heat dispersed within him like a ghost, while the cold outside pierced his body like needles.
He curled up and dragged his ragged pelt as he poked his head out from the cave.

He could no longer remember when he had last eaten.
Had it been the shriveled little worm he had dug out from beneath the rubble?
He missed the sensation of that little worm cracking against his gums. It had been bitter, nearly devoid of moisture, like eating a grain of sand, yet it had given him immense satisfaction.
His last tooth had fallen out the previous night, seemingly having degenerated after going unused for so long.
Unable to part with it, he had swallowed the tooth whole, praying that this broken tooth might provide him with even a tiny bit of nourishment.
Pray? What was praying? Whom did one pray to? A god?
He only remembered black metal skeletons falling from the sky, bringing emerald lightning to ravage the world.
He saw the sky set ablaze by fire from another world, while pointy-eared phantoms, green beastly giants, and skeletons slaughtered one another.
The planet was torn apart, continents hurled into the sky. Ancient temples seemed so fragile before true divine power, reduced to dust in an instant.
He did not know
