Background / History
Konoha service
Orochimaru was a childhood genius who became one of the Legendary Sannin and a leading candidate to succeed Hiruzen Sarutobi as Hokage. Before defecting, he had access to Konoha’s closely guarded historical secrets and had read the entire Scroll of Seals 300 304 428 610.
During the border crisis provoked by rumors about Konoha and the Rain Village, Konoha deployed him against Mist forces. He concentrated on bloodline-bearing ninja rather than weaker enemies, allowing many ordinary Mist ninja to escape 109.
On the southern front, Orochimaru faced Chiyo, Rasa, and Ebizo, the latter operating the Third Kazekage Puppet. Despite the imbalance in high-end combat power, he brought roughly half the Konoha force back safely. Unable to evade the puppet’s battlefield-wide Iron Sand attacks while protecting his army, he traded injuries with Ebizo and damaged the puppet. After withdrawing from the Land of Rivers, his Western Army defended Kikyo Castle 168 169 170.
Human experimentation and defection
Orochimaru established human experiments in the Land of Whirlpools. His later sneak attack on Kirigakure undermined an understanding between Konoha and the Mist ninja, giving Konoha a reputation for betraying an ally. Yichen interpreted his disregard for the village’s reputation as a possible sign that he intended to leave 224 238.
Hiruzen initially suppressed reports of the attack, but Danzo publicized evidence of Orochimaru’s human experiments. Jiraiya sought him out in the Land of Whirlpools and fought him after seeing his research. Orochimaru won using experimental results but spared Jiraiya; at this stage, both Jiraiya and Konoha remained emotional bonds, and he had not yet considered destroying the village 240.
Orochimaru secretly returned to Konoha, collected hidden experimental materials, and implanted an immature Curse Mark in his disciple Anko. Hiruzen subsequently designated him an S-rank Rogue Ninja. Konoha absorbed many of his former subordinates into Anbu and Root while maintaining surveillance over people connected to him 240 241.
Yichen’s trade and Akatsuki recruitment
Akatsuki’s attempts to recruit Orochimaru escalated after he killed one member of a pursuing group, destroyed many of Sasori’s puppets, and escaped wounded. Sasori and Juzo Biwa doubted they could defeat him reliably in another encounter, prompting Nagato to involve Yichen 299.
Yichen instead opened negotiations, trading information about the Sharingan and Shikotsumyaku for valuable ninjutsu. He explained bloodline evolution, the origins of chakra, and the relationship between the Sage of Six Paths and the Rabbit Goddess. Orochimaru accepted the account after evaluating its internal logic and began coveting Nagato’s Rinnegan 299 300.
Their subsequent spar ended without a decisive victor, and Yichen invited him into Akatsuki. Orochimaru joined with obtaining the Byakugan as his condition. Nagato later sent Sasori to assist that effort, despite the two men’s poor relationship 300 308 316 317.
Betrayal of Akatsuki and Snake Pit Village
While an Akatsuki member, Orochimaru investigated the Six Paths of Pain and secretly established a ninja village. He challenged Pain to observe its abilities and used Impure World Reincarnation to obtain information from people killed by the Paths 393 394.
He supplied Konoha and Sunagakure with intelligence for an attack on Akatsuki, intending to weaken Nagato and steal the Rinnegan. When Nagato’s real body did not appear, Orochimaru betrayed the organization openly, attacking the Hell and Preta Paths with giant snakes and taking out the Hell Path. He escaped the ensuing battle, leaving summoned snakes behind to obstruct pursuit 393 394 395.
His village, Snake Pit Village, stood on the southern coast of the Land of Whirlpools, away from Uzushio’s original site. The location reduced exposure to Mist attacks from the northeast while providing access to ocean resources. Its underground laboratories became his principal research base 415 518 527.
Caged Bird research and new vessels
Orochimaru’s dealings with Yichen expanded into exchanges involving White Zetsu, Caged Bird research, and bloodline materials. When Yichen leaked his research to the Hyuga Clan, Hiashi remotely killed Orochimaru’s cooperative Branch Family test subject. Observing the seal’s activation nevertheless gave Orochimaru a new approach to a research bottleneck 415 486 493.
He later failed to obtain Fugaku Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan after Fugaku’s ocular technique exposed his trap. Orochimaru left Konoha badly injured, and a subsequent Hyuga pursuit also suffered severe losses 512 514.
After taking Akira Hyuga’s body, Orochimaru injected Kimimaro’s cells in pursuit of Yin–Yang Fusion. The mismatch between Kimimaro’s stronger bloodline and Akira’s weaker one caused severe rejection. He recognized that the initial experiment would not achieve his ultimate goal, but continued studying its changes as useful evidence 527 536.
Black Zetsu approached him with information about Madara, the Moon Eye Plan, and the Tenseigan. Orochimaru distrusted the account and was more interested in studying Black Zetsu’s body. He preferred achieving Kōten Taisai through his own research before considering becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchuriki, suspecting that taking the latter route immediately would expose him to a trap 527 536.
Konoha Collapse Plan and the Sage of Six Paths
Orochimaru tested whether Yichen remained qualified to cooperate with him by attacking with six Kage-level reanimated fighters. Yichen sealed or captured several of them and forced him to retreat, exposing serious limits in his use of Impure World Reincarnation 552 553 554.
Despite distrusting Danzo, Orochimaru was tempted by an offer of the Hyuga Main Family’s Byakugan. During the ensuing Konoha conflict, he fought Itachi with reanimated Hashirama, Jiraiya, and Fugaku. He survived Might Guy’s final assault through a prepared special physical clone and escaped with Hiashi’s body 561 579 583 585.
After reincarnating into Hiashi, Orochimaru analyzed Iwagakure’s repeated reluctance to destroy Konoha and Itachi’s apparently inexhaustible ocular power. He concluded that a hidden protector stood behind the Uchiha brothers and identified the Sage of Six Paths as the likely figure. Hoping to draw the Sage out, he sent Sakon Ukon’s group to capture Sasuke and ordered Kabuto to investigate Tsunade 589.
Kakashi later requested access to Ryūchi Cave for Sasuke’s Sage Arts training. Orochimaru demanded intelligence on powerful Iwa ninja and numerous Byakugan, threatening to use Hiashi’s control of the Caged Bird against Branch Family members. Kakashi conceded, supplied mission information, and Orochimaru ambushed the exposed Hyuga ninja. After sending Sasuke to Ryūchi Cave, he called for the Sage of Six Paths to reveal himself 606.
Lunar battles and survival
Orochimaru traveled to the moon seeking further eye evolution. Knowing Yichen’s group would follow and lacking the Giant Tenseigan’s precise location, he waited above a lunar sea near the Space-Time Tunnel. Before fighting, he questioned Yichen about Sage-level development, future invaders, and the route to Kekkei Mōra 610 619.
He fought Yichen to a stalemate, adapted to Sokai’s Rinnegan techniques, faced Shion, and countered Izumi’s ocular abilities. Neji ultimately defeated him with a Truth-Seeking Orb. Orochimaru’s injured body then absorbed enormous amounts of chakra, became covered in black markings, and transformed as Kaguya possessed it 620 621 622.
During the final battle, Yichen consumed a pill made from Orochimaru’s body to enhance his strength and speed. Orochimaru nevertheless survived: the ending reveals that he possessed the White Snake Sage, absorbed her power, and obtained a Kekkei Mōra body. He expressed gratitude to Yichen for the opportunity 632.
Appearance
- Long tongue: Habitually extends his tongue and licks his lips during negotiations or moments of excitement. Its length is initially reduced after taking Akira Hyuga’s body 299 527.
- Changing human appearance: Uses Akira Hyuga’s body and later Hiashi’s, making his identity unrecognizable to Hanzo during one encounter 527 553 589.
- Forehead protector: Wears Snake Pit Village’s protector at Konoha’s Joint Chunin Exams; Yichen contrasts it with his earlier Konoha Rogue Ninja protector 573.
- Serpentine combat form: During the lunar battle, his body stretches to dozens of meters and resembles a snake more than a human 620.
Personality
Orochimaru’s defining ambition is to understand chakra and develop power rather than merely inherit or wield it. He studies failed experiments for useful results, carefully observes changes in his own body, and pursues immortality through soul transfer. Yichen particularly admires his willingness to challenge the limits imposed by bloodline inheritance 493 527 536 589.
He is calculating and opportunistic in alliances. He trades restricted ninjutsu for research-relevant information, joins Akatsuki while investigating its leader’s vulnerabilities, and uses Konoha and Sunagakure to create an opportunity against Nagato. His cooperation depends on potential benefit rather than organizational loyalty 299 300 393.
His ruthlessness coexists with selective attachment. He experiments on people and threatens mass execution through the Caged Bird, yet initially spares Jiraiya because their friendship still matters to him. He also invests time in educating Kabuto, explaining both experimental findings and strategic deductions 240 527 589 606.
Confidence does not prevent caution. He retreats when his reanimated forces are neutralized, avoids returning directly to Snake Pit Village after Konoha’s collapse, and admits that fighting three Sages without adequate intelligence offers no chance of victory 554 589 610.
Abilities & Skills
Research and Bloodline Engineering
- Conducts human experiments involving First Hokage cells, Wood Release, soul transfer, cursed seals, and bloodline fusion 224 240 304 527.
- Combines Hyuga and Kaguya genetic material to pursue the fusion of Hamura’s Sage Eye and Sage Body inheritances 301 527.
- Supplies detailed, annotated Caged Bird analyses that Iwagakure effectively uses as research textbooks 493.
- Successfully breaks the Caged Bird seal by the time Danzo discusses recruiting him for the Konoha Collapse Plan 551.
- Removes Hiashi’s Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal and performs a White Zetsu limb transplant before taking his body 589.
- Limit: Unequal bloodline strength causes severe cellular rejection; overpowering the transplanted cells does not itself guarantee successful Yin–Yang Fusion 527.
Living Corpse Reincarnation and Survival
- Transfers his soul into replacement bodies, extending his life and gaining access to their bloodlines 527 589.
- Uses Snake Substitution to emerge from a discarded body after otherwise devastating attacks 300 620.
- Splits into numerous small snakes to escape Sokai’s Totsuka Blade, then reforms from those that survive 621.
- Regrows a lost arm, though direct regeneration is extremely expensive even at Sage level 621.
- Survives his apparent final death by possessing and absorbing the White Snake Sage 632.
- Limits: Living Corpse Reincarnation involves a dangerous period of weakness; escaping Sokai’s sealing attack costs roughly half his chakra 589 621.
Snake Ninjutsu and Summoning
- Summons giant snakes, including Manda, for attacks, defense, and battlefield obstruction 237 393 395 469.
- Uses Many Snakes Formation to restrict opponents and gain time to reposition 300 469.
- Employs Shadow Snake Hand for close-range attacks 579.
- Hides small snakes in his clothing to continuously exchange chakra with him and help break genjutsu 583.
- Replaces ordinary summoned snakes with constructs condensed from his own Sage Chakra during Sage-level combat 620.
- Limit: Ryūchi Cave’s ordinary snakes and Manda do not remain effective against Sage-level opponents 610 620.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Uses reanimated enemies as intelligence sources while investigating the Six Paths of Pain 394.
- Fields Hashirama, Tobirama, Jiraiya, Pakura, Hanzo, and Chiyo against Yichen 553.
- Later summons Hashirama, Jiraiya, and Fugaku against Itachi, exploiting both their abilities and Itachi’s reluctance to attack his father 579.
- Shares reanimated fighters’ vision, allowing him to fight without facing Itachi directly 583.
- Limits: His summoned fighters include weakened versions of the originals. Soul-sealing techniques sever his control, and Yichen’s permanent sealing of Tobirama’s soul prevents another summoning 553 554.
Byakugan and Sage-Level Techniques
- Uses the Byakugan to monitor battles remotely and inspect sealing runes 553.
- His evolved eyes retain the Byakugan’s outward appearance while gaining special ocular techniques 619.
- Produces powerful shockwaves that scatter ninjutsu and briefly break Sokai’s restraining dōjutsu 619 620 621.
- Uses All-Killing Ash Bones as weapons, threatens opponents’ Susanoo, and escapes Izumi’s Chibaku Tensei with them 621 622.
- Maintains sight through Water Release screens that obstruct Izumi’s vision and prevent her sight-dependent techniques 621.
- Limits: Yichen’s scattered Light Release chakra interferes with his Byakugan, and a Sage Art Rasenshuriken breaches his shockwave defense 553 620.
General Combat and Intelligence
- Possesses a broad ninjutsu repertoire, including five-attribute techniques, genjutsu, Earth Release defenses, and Triple Rashōmon 237 469 620 621.
- Combines swordsmanship with serpentine taijutsu and extensive experience adapting to unfamiliar ocular abilities 621.
- Infiltrates Konoha through sensory-barrier weaknesses, hidden supporters, and former Root operatives 310 592.
- Deduces the Sage of Six Paths’ continuing influence from political patterns, Yichen’s restraint, and Itachi’s abnormal endurance 589.
- Limit: Unlike Yichen, he cannot freely cast his broad ninjutsu repertoire without hand seals, leaving him disadvantaged against rapid seal-less attacks 620 621.

Trivia
- His human experimentation begins earlier than in the original story discussed by Yichen, with the Land of Whirlpools providing a less restrictive research environment than Konoha 224.
- A publication read by Kakashi portrays him as a falsely accused researcher while omitting his inhumane experiments. The passage explicitly distinguishes this sympathetic portrayal from what he actually did 353.
