"This is unbelievable!"
After Peter recovered from that scalp-tingling sensation, he immediately jumped up in excitement. "I'd bet Osborn is up to something. Let me use the computer." He sat down at Ben's desk and turned on the old, bulky computer.
"Bzz—"
Even the computer tower was humming.
Peter opened a browser and tapped away at the keyboard. One spider image after another popped up. "Osborn Enterprise is researching spiders, but they definitely aren't just using Silk."
"You're planning to investigate Osborn?"
"Don't you want to know how we mutated, or whether there'll be any side effects?" Peter countered.
Ben thought, You mutated because you were chosen by the Spider Totem, while I mutated because the Omnitrix protected me.
He knew far more than Peter did.
But he merely shook his head. "I don't want to know at all."
Although Osborn Enterprise was still far behind Stark Industries, it was one of New York's leading corporations. In a society where capital represented power, going against them would only invite endless trouble.
Several of Spider-Man's enemies had deep ties to Osborn.
Ben had no intention of becoming a Super Hero, much less wading into that mess.
Compared to that, he would rather make good use of his Superpowers and give this not-so-well-off family a better life.
So making money was what mattered most.
At that thought, Ben felt Grey Matter in the watch calling to him.
He could make a few little inventions and start a company of his own. He could call it Parker Industries... No, that name was unlucky. He should pick another one.
The name Parker Industries always made Ben think of Otto Parker.
"It should be called Primus Technology," he muttered.
"What Primus Technology?" Peter asked without looking back.
"The company I'm going to start. Peter, you can work for me in the future."
"Very funny," Peter replied perfunctorily. He opened another webpage. This time, the image was no longer a spider, but a blond man. "Look, Curt Connors. A famous biologist. He used to work with my dad, and he works at Osborn."
"So you suspect he knows something?" Ben asked, one hand resting on the back of the chair.
Of course he knew the infamous Lizard.
"I want to go talk to him." Peter said it with a fire in his eyes, falling into a feverish state. Clearly, this was not only about his own abilities. He also wanted to speak with his father's former colleague about his long-dead parents.
Honestly, there was nothing to blame him for.
It was just that Peter had forgotten that no matter what, his parents would not come back from the dead. He was too deeply caught up in it, even arguing with Uncle Ben over it. Both Uncle Ben and Aunt May worried that he would get hurt because of it.
"If you want to go, go ahead. But I won't be joining you." Ben had no blood relation to Peter's parents. Uncle Ben and Aunt May had adopted him first, and only afterward had Peter been sent over by his parents.
To him, what mattered more was protecting Uncle Ben and Aunt May and keeping them from harm.
Spider-Man could live without Ben, but he could not!
He did not care about any Spider-Web Incident. Even if Hulk Spider-Man stood in front of him, Ben would turn into Four Arms and punch him first!
"You really don't want to know what mutation happened to your body?" Peter asked in surprise. He could not understand why Ben was so indifferent to everything. "This could affect the rest of our lives. We might become Super Heroes, or... super monsters."
"I trust that if you get any results, you won't just leave your cousin to become a Spider Monster." Expressionlessly, Ben grabbed Peter by the shoulder and effortlessly lifted him up. It felt like picking up a watermelon.
"What are you doing?" Peter struggled in midair.
Spider-Man's Superpowers did not reach their peak the instant they were gained. They needed time to grow, as well as some tempering.
Of course, lifting a skinny young man like Peter was far too easy.
"Throwing you out, obviously. I never invited you into my room." Ben tossed him straight outside, shut the door, and locked it.
For the time being, he still planned to keep the Omnitrix secret.
It was not because he was guarding against Peter, but because he was wary of S.H.I.E.L.D.
"First, let's see whether I can crack the Omnitrix's security program." He activated the watch again, turned the raised core to the Grey Matter symbol, and lightly pressed down with his palm. Green light instantly filled the entire room.
The next second, his body transformed into palm-sized Grey Matter—Grey Matter looked like an upright gray frog, with enormous hands, bulging eyes, and horizontal pupils.
"I can feel so much mechanical knowledge pouring into my brain!" Ben exclaimed in surprise.
He had not expected that transforming into Grey Matter would not only make his mind sharper, but also cause knowledge he had never understood before to emerge from his brain.
"Could Galvan knowledge already be inherited through DNA? That's incredible!"
But clearly, this knowledge was still not enough for Ben to crack the Omnitrix. In fact, perhaps Azmuth had anticipated this possibility long ago and deliberately placed the watch's core on Grey Matter's back. Forget cracking it—even touching it was not easy for Ben.
Ben pinched his chin and thought. "Looks like I'll need a precision mechanical arm to work for me first."
But that was no easy task for him, either. Grey Matter had plenty of knowledge in his mind, but it was far too advanced for the original Ben.
Even Einstein, if he suddenly saw technology twenty levels beyond his own, could only call it a miracle.
"I'd better be practical," he said, clenching his right fist and striking it into his left palm. He had clearly thought of a good idea.
"How about finishing my homework first!"
He acted immediately. Ben climbed onto the desk. The physics textbook lying on it was nearly bigger than he was. He picked up a ballpoint pen that could serve as a rifle barrel and bit his finger as he looked at the textbook.
"Find the minimum magnetic induction intensity and the corresponding velocity of the sphere?" He shook his head and muttered in disbelief. "Earth children study this? Unbelievable. Galvan children are born with intelligence far beyond theirs."
"Easy. Too easy!"
He casually wrote down the correct answer, shaking his head as he guided the ballpoint pen onward.
In less than ten minutes, problems that normally took him several hours to solve were dealt with just like that. It was as easy as filling in "1+1+2."
After finishing his homework, Ben looked at the computer screen, which was larger than he was, and made a gesture as if rolling up his sleeves.
"Alright. Now it's time to do something serious!"
