Female spiders could lay a great many eggs at once, so only a few were needed for reproduction.
Deliberately keeping a small number of female spiders to drive a large number of male spiders was a more efficient survival strategy.
After all, food was limited, and most nutrients had to be reserved for reproduction.
They kept more male spiders around to work normally, then ate them on the spot after reproduction to replenish nutrients.
