Where did intelligent robots come from?
No one knew.
Sutter, the Father of Intelligence, said God had told him in a dream.
Some people reverse-engineered them and discovered that part of the code came from Diablo.
Of course, it was only part of it. Even with the full code, they still could not reproduce the same intelligence.
Then a book claiming it could explain the issue appeared, instantly setting off a craze.
"Robots are the product of an extraterrestrial merchant. This merchant is a Food Merchant, traveling among major Civilizations and supplying ingredients to Advanced Civilizations."
"It chose humanity on Earth. But Earthlings are barbaric, combative, coarse-tempered, filthy beyond measure..."
"Delicious food should be like this: listening to beautiful music, living comfortably, and possessing gentle temperaments, so that the meat will be tender..."
"So it released robot technology, allowing humans to raise themselves, just like free-range cattle and sheep. They would graze on their own, entertain themselves, and eventually grow meat far superior to that of livestock kept behind fences."
"Now, we are facing the very same situation!"
"Our next generation is already delicious enough. They are about to be harvested!"
After reading the book, many people panicked.
Because it sounded logical and well-supported. Though it was all fabricated—a conspiracy theory that seemed convincing—once they actually looked into it, they could find nothing at all.
For example, no one had ever seen any Food Merchant.
No one had ever seen an Advanced Civilization either, much less observed one.
Even explanations for the Fermi Paradox showed that extraterrestrial civilizations found it difficult to communicate with Earth's civilization.
Things like the Great Filter and the Zoo Hypothesis all suggested that the distances between Civilizations were simply too vast, and that they would destroy themselves before any contact could occur.
