Because they still had to keep fleeing.
They could not maintain a stable water supply.
So they needed to conserve water.
Letting it evaporate for nothing would be far too wasteful.
With greenhouse production, large amounts of water would not evaporate so easily.
Instead, it would condense into droplets and fall back down.
Anyone with a greenhouse at home knew how much water collected on the plastic sheeting.
And greenhouses needed watering far less often than ordinary fields.
Where it once took one hundred units of water to grow crops, a greenhouse needed only thirty, or even twenty.
That alone saved more than half the water.
Compared to the water people drank, the water consumed in food production was the real bulk of it.
And industry consumed even more water than agriculture.
Their industry mainly produced weapons.
There were very few industrial goods for personal use.
Other than clothing, they had virtually no light industrial goods.
Pots, bowls, and other household items were all scavenged from various places.
In short, they made do whenever they could.
Only when it came to weapons and defense did they refuse to make do.
After all, the monsters came to inspect them regularly...
And they could not be fooled.
Before long, they began expanding their population.
They grew from three hundred people to three thousand.
And everyone had a gun.
Even the logistics personnel carried one.
They all used Smoothbore Guns.
Smoothbore Guns were easy to make.
Because they had collected a great deal of steel piping.
The quality of that piping was extremely reliable.
Of course, its accuracy could not be guaranteed.
Within fifty meters, though, it was still reasonably accurate.
But not many people could shoot accurately at fifty meters anyway.
If everyone fired together, they could unleash a whole row of
