Ch. 2003Hope

Wenren Sheng explained why he had killed Jia Zhen and warned Zhao Han and Wang Wenwen that the Dream of the Red Chamber world could only be saved by giving it hope through industrial revolution and lasting change. He urged them to transform the Jia Manor into a resilient family rather than rely on examinations or official rank.

  • Wenren Sheng arranged Jia Zhen’s death by secretly poisoning his favorite foods, and Jia Rong took his place as head of Ningguo Manor.
  • Zhao Han and Wang Wenwen passed the scholar examinations after enduring the foul conditions of the Provincial Examination.
  • Wenren Sheng entered the restaurant room and warned Zhao Han and Wang Wenwen that their careless discussion could bring disaster.
  • Wenren Sheng explained that the leading men of the Dream of the Red Chamber world died because the world’s fate offered no hope, while ordinary people suffered the greatest consequences.
  • Zhao Han said industrial revolution was the way to save the world, and Wenren Sheng told them to reshape the Jia Manor into a durable family that could withstand decline.

Ch. 2004Blocking the Way

Zhao Han, Wang Wenwen, and Wu Shanshan planned to build an industrial foothold through textiles on an estate belonging to Wang Xifeng, while first removing Jia She from the Jia household’s power structure. After Jia Baoyu and Jia Rong passed the Xiucai examination, Jia She died suddenly, leaving rumors that the elders had blocked the younger generation’s rise.

  • Zhao Han, Wang Wenwen, and Wu Shanshan agreed to approach Wang Xifeng and Jia Lian as allies and clean up the Jia household’s finances and leadership.
  • The three chose Wang Xifeng’s dowry estate as a place to develop industry and settled on textiles as their first business.
  • Ten days later, Jia Rong placed thirty-second and Jia Baoyu placed seventh in the Provincial Examination, earning Xiucai degrees and prompting celebrations throughout the Jia household.
  • Jia She ordered Jia Lian beaten for failing to study, so Wu Shanshan went to Mother Jia for protection and resolved to kill Jia She.
  • Jia She died suddenly that night, and rumors spread that Jia Zhen and Jia She had died because they blocked Jia Baoyu and Jia Rong’s rise.

Ch. 2005Islands and an Outlet

Jia Baoyu, Jia Lian, and Jia Rong built a secret steam-powered silk factory, but officials and merchants constrained its sales until Zhao Han found a way to smuggle silk overseas. After coal shortages stalled expansion, the group waited for official postings, and Jia Rong eventually became a County Magistrate on a southern island.

  • Jia Lian, Jia Baoyu, and Jia Rong installed a Steam Engine in an enclosed factory and trained 150 servants to operate it.
  • The factory used steam power to produce raw silk at ten times the output of hand production, but the Jiangnan Weaving Bureau imposed a sales quota after weavers lost work.
  • Jia Lian discovered that a Xue Family manager had been bribed by a maritime merchant, and Zhao Han arranged to smuggle silk to overseas buyers.
  • The factory expanded its silk trade but ran into a coal shortage because the Imperial Court restricted mining and the roads could not supply enough fuel.
  • Two years later, Jia Baoyu passed the provincial examination, while Jia Rong became a provincial graduate and obtained a County Magistrate posting on a southern island.

Ch. 2006Eternal Prosperity

Jia Rong survived malaria on the southern island and turned his magistracy into a pharmaceutical enterprise, while Jia Baoyu earned the jinshi degree and explained how Xue Baochai could reform her family’s shops. The chapter left Jia Rong’s business expanding and Xue Baochai considering how to take control of the Xue Family’s affairs.

  • Jia Rong contracted malaria soon after arriving on the island, but Jia Lian obtained Quinine and helped him recover.
  • Jia Rong led a sanitation campaign, gathered local information with Jia Hui, and followed Jia Lian’s advice to build a pharmaceutical industry using wasteland and local labor.
  • Jia Rong and Jia Lian established medicine production with Steam Engines, and Jia Rong arranged to remain magistrate for as long as ten years.
  • Jia Baoyu passed the metropolitan examination and became a jinshi, prompting celebrations at the Jia Family residence.
  • Jia Baoyu told Xue Baochai to oversee the Xue Family’s shops from behind the curtain, rotate managers, and use performance incentives to limit corruption.

Ch. 2007The Broader Situation

After Jia Baoyu passed the jinshi examination, marriage proposals poured in, but Madam Wang refused her brother’s attempt to arrange a match and asked Wang Ziteng about Baoyu’s future. Wang Ziteng warned that unrest and famine made outside appointments dangerous, leaving Madam Wang troubled as Wang Xifeng asked her to summon Jia Lian home.

  • At the banquet, Lin Daiyu teased Jia Baoyu and Xue Baochai, while Zhao Han reflected on their prospects and Jia Yuanchun’s approaching elevation.
  • After the banquet, Madam Wang rejected her second brother’s proposal to marry his daughter to Jia Baoyu, pleased that Baoyu’s success had changed his standing.
  • Wang Ziteng explained Baoyu’s options after the jinshi examination and secretly warned Madam Wang that conditions across the empire made outside posts dangerous.
  • Madam Wang decided Baoyu should remain in the capital, then told Mother Jia that Baoyu could wait until eighteen to marry.
  • Wang Xifeng asked Madam Wang to send for Jia Lian, who had been away in the south for two or three years, and Madam Wang agreed to have Wang Ziteng write him.

Ch. 2008Three Sighs

Zijuan asked Jia Baoyu what he intended for Lin Daiyu, and he promised to give her an honorable status and remain with her. After Lin Daiyu grew jealous of his other declarations, Jia Baoyu distracted her with his fears for the Jia Family and his plan to remake the Imperial Court, leaving her mood improved but still wary of his attention to other women.

  • Lin Daiyu worried that she might not live long, and Zijuan went to ask Jia Baoyu about her future.
  • Jia Baoyu promised Zijuan that he would give Lin Daiyu an honorable status within five years, then visited Lin Daiyu.
  • Lin Daiyu realized Jia Baoyu had made similar declarations to other women and grew angry, so Jia Baoyu sought advice from Little Illusion and Wenren Sheng.
  • Jia Baoyu sighed about the Jia Family's decline and told Lin Daiyu that revolution and making glass could help remake the Imperial Court.
  • Lin Daiyu understood Jia Baoyu's metaphor and felt better, but reminded him not to repeat his romantic declarations to other women; she tossed him a handkerchief after he sprayed spittle while sighing.

Ch. 2009Governor-General

Jia Rong, Jia Lian, and Jia Baoyu faced a threat to their booming pharmaceutical industry when Governor-General Fan Yu demanded an enormous payment. They used the influence of Grand Eunuchs Xia Bingzhong and Dai Quan to reduce the demand, but recognized that their business remained vulnerable to officials who wielded imperial authority.

  • Jia Rong and Jia Lian reviewed Yangrong Pharmaceutical’s accounts, noting its growing workforce and profits.
  • A manager reported that Governor-General Fan Yu demanded 300,000 taels from their branch to fund bandit suppression, threatening to send troops if they refused.
  • Jia Lian and Jia Rong tried invoking the Xue, Jia, and Wang families, but Fan Yu’s side lowered its demand only to 200,000 taels.
  • Jia Rong, Jia Lian, and Jia Baoyu met through their unusual long-distance contact and concluded the demand was a test that could lead to officials taking over the industry.
  • Zhao Han reminded them that Xia Bingzhong and Dai Quan were Grand Eunuchs, so Jia Lian arranged to place the industry under their names.
  • Fan Yu reduced his demand to 10,000 taels, and the three recognized that the change reflected the power of those able to wield imperial authority.

Ch. 2010Case Solving

Jia Lian, Jia Rong, and Jia Baoyu began preparing a rebellion by organizing factory workers, building an industrial base, and arming an island stronghold. After Jia Baoyu became a Ministry of Justice Secretary, she uncovered rampant corruption and wrongful convictions, then received a suspicious adultery-and-murder case that appeared to conceal an attempt to seize a widow’s family property.

  • Jia Lian, Jia Rong, and Jia Baoyu decided to prepare for rebellion by protecting their factories and building military industries rather than immediately hiring soldiers.
  • Jia Lian organized three hundred workers into a Factory Protection Squad, while the three men acquired an island and brought refugees there to develop coal, iron, and weapons production.
  • Jia Rong and Jia Lian built a five-thousand-man musket force with twenty bronze cannons, while Jia Baoyu completed her probation and became a sixth-rank Ministry of Justice Secretary.
  • Zhao Han examined the Ministry of Justice’s case files and found that corruption, torture, and fabricated testimony had led to widespread wrongful murder convictions.
  • Zhao Han investigated an adultery-and-murder case and suspected that the dead husband’s brother had invented an adulterer to seize the widow’s land and shops.

Ch. 2011A Simple Case Solved

Zhao Han investigated the murder of Zhang Er and uncovered that Zhang Si had killed his brother, framed Zhang Jia-shi, and tried to take the family property. Zhang Si confessed after Zhao Han confronted him and ordered the leg clamps used, while Zhang Jia-shi and her son were reunited.

  • Zhao Han traveled to Daxing County with Ming Yan, Li Gui, and a Ministry of Justice Clerk to review the case.
  • County Magistrate Liu brought Zhang Jia-shi to court and explained that she had been kept at the Village Head’s home rather than in jail.
  • Zhang Jia-shi repeated a confession blaming a wandering monk, but her descriptions revealed details matching Zhang Si, the informant.
  • Zhao Han summoned Zhang Jia-shi’s nine-year-old son, then ordered Zhang Si brought before the court.
  • Zhang Si confessed that he had killed Zhang Er, threatened Zhang Jia-shi with her son’s life, and forced her to take the blame.

Ch. 2012Seeking Shelter

Jia Baoyu exposed Zhang Si as Zhang Er’s murderer and protected Zhang Jia-shi and her son by taking them under the Jia Family’s protection. After returning home, he gave the sisters case files to study, then learned the Ministry of Justice had praised his work.

  • Zhao Han questioned Zhang Si, who confessed that he had hidden the murder weapon beneath his stove and Zhang Er’s head in an iron pot.
  • An express constable recovered the knife and head, and Jia Baoyu sentenced Zhang Si to execution after the autumn assizes, pending official approval.
  • Zhang Jia-shi asked to become a servant of the Jia household for protection, and Jia Baoyu arranged for the family’s servants to manage her land and shops.
  • Jia Baoyu returned to the Jia residence with Zhang Jia-shi and her son, then told Lin Daiyu, Xue Baochai, Shi Xiangyun, and the other sisters about the case and gave them case records to solve.
  • Three days later, Jia Baoyu learned that County Magistrate Liu had praised him in a letter and that the Minister of Justice had commended his work.

Ch. 2013Rebellion

Jia Baoyu investigated the suspicious drowning of Wang Xin, the son of pirate chieftain Wang Bolun, whose threat to rebel had alarmed the Ministry of Justice. After noticing Wang Xin’s fear of water and Qian Huaiyi’s unusual description, Jia Baoyu suspected the death involved a hidden motive and prepared to question the four survivors.

  • Jia Baoyu was summoned by the Minister of Justice and accepted the task of investigating Wang Xin’s death.
  • The Minister explained that Wang Bolun had threatened to rebel unless the court identified his son’s murderer.
  • Jia Baoyu reviewed the case file and learned that Wang Xin had drowned after spending the night on a boat with Zhao Youren, Qian Huaiyi, Sun Hanli, and Li Duozhi.
  • Jia Baoyu noticed that Wang Xin had been intensely afraid of water since childhood and questioned why he had boarded the boat.
  • Jia Baoyu suspected that Wang Xin may have been persuaded or seduced into going and focused on Qian Huaiyi’s description.
  • The Minister told Jia Baoyu that the four survivors had been brought to the capital unharmed and authorized him to question them.

Ch. 2014Time

Zhao Han questioned Zhao Youren about Wang Xin’s death and learned that he had seen someone resembling Wang Xin at the bow hours before dawn, despite the coroner’s claim that Wang Xin had drowned the previous night. After discovering the coroner’s timing depended on waterweed found in the body, Zhao Han realized the evidence could have been manipulated by drowning Wang Xin earlier, reviving him, and drowning him again.

  • Zhao Han interrogated Zhao Youren, who denied killing Wang Xin and blamed Qian Huaiyi for insisting they spend the night aboard the boat.
  • Zhao Youren recalled seeing Wang Xin standing at the bow with his back turned a few hours before dawn, then panicked when he remembered the coroner said Wang Xin had been drowned all night.
  • Zhao Han arranged for Zhao Youren to receive medical care and protection, then questioned the Ministry of Justice’s coroner about estimating time of death.
  • The coroner explained that waterweed found deep in Wang Xin’s nose had grown to its current size over the course of a night, which he took as proof of when Wang Xin drowned.
  • Zhao Han realized the time-of-death evidence could have been falsified by drowning Wang Xin earlier, reviving him, and drowning him again.

Ch. 2015The Exchange of Truth and Falsehood

Zhao Han questioned Qian Huaiyi about Wang Xin’s apparent murder and learned that Wang Xin had gone to sea to escape his father and study Western weapons. Wenren Sheng revealed that Qian Huaiyi and Wang Xin had switched identities, leaving Zhao Han to realize she had been deceived about who died.

  • Zhao Han questioned the silent Qian Huaiyi and learned that he feared the Great Pirate and had been tormented by memories of a massacre he witnessed as a boy.
  • Qian Huaiyi confessed that he had killed the foreign Father who abused him, then told Wang Xin about the slaughter and Wang Xin’s plan to learn the enemy’s strengths.
  • Qian Huaiyi claimed Wang Xin had faked his death with a drowned refugee’s body and gone to sea to escape his father and learn to use Western guns and cannons.
  • Zhao Han urged Qian Huaiyi to unite with others who had their eyes opened, believing she had solved the case.
  • Wenren Sheng revealed that Qian Huaiyi and Wang Xin had switched identities: Qian Huaiyi drowned himself, and Wang Xin took his place as the son of a Seventh Rank Garrison Officer.
  • Wenren Sheng explained that Wang Xin had been seen at the bow because he went to look at Qian Huaiyi’s drowning, and Zhao Han realized she had been fooled.

Ch. 2016Grand View Garden

Zhao Han solved the Wang Xin and Qian Huaiyi body-swap case, earning an imperial reward that helped set Yuanchun’s promotion and the Grand View Garden plans in motion. As construction began, Zhao Han copied the garden’s famous names from the original story and left Jia Zheng impressed.

  • Zhao Han and Wenren Sheng concluded that Wang Xin had switched places with Qian Huaiyi to escape his controlling father, and Zhao Han exposed the deception, prompting Wang Xin to confess.
  • Zhao Han submitted the evidence to the Minister of Justice, who reported the case to the Yongkang Emperor; the Emperor rewarded Liu and made Jia Baoyu a Cloud Rider Commandant.
  • The Emperor promoted Yuanchun to Virtuous Consort and ordered her move to Wenquan Palace, prompting Zhao Han to anticipate the costly construction of the Grand View Garden.
  • Madam Wang celebrated Zhao Han’s success, and Jia Yun arrived to help prepare for Yuanchun’s homecoming; half a month later, work on the garden began.
  • Jia Zheng asked Zhao Han to name the garden’s sites, so Zhao Han copied names such as Xiao Xiang Pavilion and Yihong Courtyard, earning praise from Jia Zheng and the others.

Ch. 2017Comfortable

Six months after the Grand View Garden was completed, Zhao Han toured it with her sisters and welcomed the imperial concubine, whose visit left Zhao Han more determined to rebel. She then met with Jia Lian and Jia Rong to discuss their overseas forces and plans, which were steadily preparing to challenge the court.

  • Zhao Han and her sisters toured the Grand View Garden, and Zhao Han ordered that only the sisters be allowed inside.
  • The imperial concubine arrived after the household had waited all day, reunited tearfully with Mother Jia and Madam Wang, and spoke privately with Zhao Han.
  • The imperial concubine praised Xue Baochai, invited Zhao Han and the sisters to live in the garden, and judged Lin Daiyu's poetry best, with Xue Baochai close behind.
  • After seeing off the imperial concubine, Zhao Han resolved that she had to rebel and called Jia Lian and Jia Rong to discuss their plans.
  • Jia Lian and Jia Rong described their forces, overseas territories, and strategy of recruiting refugees, while Zhao Han objected to kidnapping registered citizens.

Ch. 2018Naval Battle

Jia Rong and Zhao Han discussed disease and the dangers of personally commanding naval forces before Rongyao Company confronted Wang Bolun’s pirates at sea. Zhao Han recognized the pirates’ retreat as a trap, but one patrol ship ignored Jia Rong’s order to stop and continued the pursuit.

  • Jia Rong, Jia Lian, and Zhao Han discussed disease, available medicines, and the risks of losing military control when leaders stayed away from the front lines.
  • Jia Rong decided to lure Great Pirate Wang Bolun into a confrontation, while Wang Bolun agreed to join forces with Fan Yu Governor-General against Rongyao Company.
  • Rongyao Company’s patrol ships intercepted pirates pursuing three merchant vessels and drove the pirates into retreat with their longer-range cannons.
  • Zhao Han realized the pirates had fought deliberately to lure the patrol deeper, and Jia Rong ordered the ships to stop pursuing them.
  • One patrol fast ship ignored Jia Rong’s order and continued after the fleeing pirates.

Ch. 2019Rebellion

Jia Rong and Zhao Han defeated the naval yamen’s fleet after its officers tried to force Rongyao Company to surrender. The Governor-General’s advisers chose negotiation over escalation, and Jia Rong settled terms with Mister Feng.

  • Jia Rong warned the patrol ships about reefs and an ambush as they pursued the naval yamen’s vessels through the islands.
  • Zhao Han urged Jia Rong to seize the naval vice general, and Jia Rong ordered the patrol ships to fire on his small oared sailing ship.
  • The vice general fled, the naval fleet collapsed, and the patrol ships captured or scattered its vessels while the pirates also withdrew.
  • Mister Feng persuaded the Governor-General not to declare rebellion or arrest Jia Lian, arguing that the government lacked the means to suppress Rongyao Company.
  • Mister Feng visited Jia Rong and negotiated a settlement of forty thousand taels, including payment for a Navy Admiral appointment.

Ch. 2020NPC

After deciding to accelerate their plans, Jia Rong, Zhao Han, and Jia Lian resettled a million refugees and discussed building a commodity economy around farmers. The chapter followed Wang Ergen through a day of selling produce and buying necessities, showing how ordinary village households entered the economic cycle.

  • Jia Lian, Jia Rong, and Zhao Han concluded that the weak imperial court would tolerate their expansion, so they accelerated settlement, land distribution, and development across the islands.
  • The three discussed how independent farmers, commerce, taxation, and essential goods such as medicine and cloth could sustain a new economy.
  • Wang Ergen and his wife hauled grain and poultry to town, where he sold his grain at a reduced grade after refusing to bribe the depot clerks, while restaurants paid well for his poultry.
  • Wang Ergen bought cloth and considered purchasing medicine and coal, but decided to save his remaining money instead.
  • Wang Ergen returned home to his son, having sold produce for money and bought necessities, and another round of the local economic cycle began.

Ch. 2021Wang Ziteng

Zhao Han gave Wang Ziteng money for the court’s northern campaign, and Jia Baoyu later helped him defeat a fortified enemy with a trench tactic. After the Emperor promoted Wang Ziteng, Jia Baoyu’s warning helped him avoid a likely assassination, and Wang returned to the capital reflecting on how he had lost his military foundation.

  • Zhao Han gave Wang Ziteng twenty thousand taels for the campaign and began cutting Jia Manor’s expenses.
  • Wang Ziteng’s army spent months besieging a fortress defended by firearms and cannons until Jia Baoyu advised him to dig zigzag trenches covered with earth-laden boards.
  • Wang Ziteng’s troops used the trenches to approach the fortress and reduce its defenders to just over two hundred, forcing them to surrender.
  • The Emperor promoted Wang Ziteng to Marquis Who Pacifies the North and Grand Secretary, then summoned him to the capital while sending an imperial physician to treat his illness.
  • Jia Baoyu’s men gave Wang Ziteng Aspirin, which quickly eased his fever and headache, while a coded letter warned him that the Emperor might discard him after using him.
  • Wang Ziteng asked to be excused from entering the capital, returned after the Emperor’s decree, and told Jia Baoyu that losing command over the capital’s defenses had left him without a foundation.

Ch. 2022Advancement

Zhao Han advised Wang Ziteng that laws could restrain emperors and ministers, but he retired and the emperor forced his family to repay a huge deficit. As the Jia Family moved to Jinling and Jia Rong prepared to rebel after the court blocked refugee emigration, a pirate fleet drew the court’s attention toward the Capital City while officials sent the Minister of War south with only two hundred guards.

  • Zhao Han told Wang Ziteng that Western legal systems could restrain both monarchs and ministers, but Wang Ziteng retired rather than openly resist the emperor.
  • The emperor ordered Wang Ziteng’s family to repay half of a deficit from his time governing Ping An Prefecture, and the Jia Family relocated to Jinling.
  • The Rongyao Group seized a river island near Jinling, while Zhao Han returned to Jiangnan and refugees continued sailing overseas.
  • Censor Liu persuaded the emperor to prohibit refugees from going overseas, and officials began blocking departures or demanding bribes.
  • Jia Rong and Jia Lian decided to fight in Wang Bolun’s name and sent a fleet north to draw imperial troops away from Jiangnan.
  • Pirates seized people near the Capital City, and the court dispatched the Minister of War to Jiangnan with only two hundred guards.
