Background

Yarja was raised in Vita City’s slums. As a child, he entered Luofan Academy but could not graduate because he failed its practical assessment. His examiner, Moni, became frustrated that he evaded her attacks for half an hour, used her full strength in violation of the rules, and had him declared unqualified for being “timid and fearful of combat.” 61 76

The academy’s refusal to reconsider the result left him without a diploma for seven years. His parents’ disappointment and his mother’s subsequent death from illness drove him toward revenge.
