Since arriving, Russell hasn't felt secure, especially after transmigrating to a world with supernatural powers.
Snow demons ravage, dragons roar.
He was afraid of being killed by some accidental power if he wasn't careful.
Perhaps only those who have died once fear death more. When Russell discovered the assassins, he truly broke out in a cold sweat.
Two full-force slaps finally calmed him down a bit.
"You're saying Lone Wolf Lisbon plans to lure a group of Snow Ghosts to attack my territory to test my methods?" Russell sat back down.
After listening to the wanderer Catherine's explanation, he couldn't help but look at Eric, and then at Charles, who was called over later.
Eric grunted, "I've heard of Lisbon. He's a great ranger. They call him Boss Lone Wolf over at the Xiangshui River Cave."
"Boss Lone Wolf Lisbon, hmm, I've heard that name too," Charles said, his eyes darting around Catherine. "As for this wanderer, she should be one of the Wildcat Sisters, the older one Katie, and the younger one Catherine. They're both well-known figures."
"Wildcat Sisters?" Russell asked curiously.
Catherine was still bound and sitting on the damp floor. The black mask on her face had been removed, revealing her swollen cheeks.
But it was clear that even without the swelling, she wasn't particularly attractive.
Her skin was pale, her eye sockets sunken. She wasn't old, but the nasolabial folds were deep, giving her the look of an addict.
"My sister and I don't want to accept Boss Lone Wolf's rule. The Xiangshui River Cave has always followed the principle of freedom. We can be rats in the underground world, but we don't want to be anyone's servant," Catherine said earnestly, looking at Russell.
Charles snorted, "What principles can you lowly people have? Even the life of a servant is better than yours."
"You don't understand what freedom is..." Catherine's voice lowered. "Besides, we just don't want to be servants in the underground world."
Hearing this, Russell raised an eyebrow.
But he didn't offer any opinion on the matter.
He simply asked again, "Lone Wolf Lisbon wants to lure Snow Ghosts to invade my territory. Why did you come to deliver this message to me? Aren't you afraid you won't be able to get along with Lisbon when you go back, or that I'll simply get rid of Lisbon for you?"
"Baron Roman stands behind you. We Wildcat Sisters just want to live well, and we hope our excellent neighbor can also live well."
"Excellent neighbor?" Russell stroked his chin. "Has my reputation for excellence reached the Xiangshui River Cave already?"
He hadn't even shown off his talents yet, so how did he earn a reputation for excellence?
Catherine's answer cleared his confusion: "There aren't many lords who hire serfs to work and are willing to provide them with meals."
"Hmm," Russell suddenly felt a bit emotional.
So, doing this was already considered being an excellent lord. The serfs and free people really didn't have high expectations for their lords.
He looked at Catherine and asked calmly, "How can I trust you?"
"I have a letter from my sister on me. I was originally planning to slip it through the window, and by the way... meet the new lord."
Charles immediately reached out and groped Catherine all over.
"Don't touch me randomly... it's in a hidden pocket near your knee!" Catherine's face turned red, and the slap marks became even clearer.
"I need to make sure you're not carrying any weapons," Charles said righteously, then fumbled in the hidden pocket near her knee in her tight-fitting clothes and pulled out a folded letter.
He handed it to Russell.
Russell unfolded it and saw the crumpled writing on the paper: "Dear Neighbor, beware of Lisbon. He will lure Snow Ghosts to invade Wuyou Snake Manor."
The signature read: "Your neighbor, Little Wildcat."
"Hiding and peeking," Russell commented, referring to the letter and the Wildcat Sisters' methods, which he found somewhat unsophisticated.
Catherine retorted, "We can't afford to offend either you or Boss Lone Wolf."
Confirming that Catherine wasn't actually trying to assassinate him, Russell suddenly felt a bit listless. "Teacher Charles, untie her. And pour her a cup of hot water."
"Thank you," Catherine gave Russell a deep look.
"Do you need a change of dry clothes?"
"No need to change. My clothes are lined with fleece and close-fitting, so no rain got in," Catherine pulled up her collar and shook it quickly, shaking off all the external moisture. "Besides, I'm a ranger with Battle Qi protecting me, so I can wear wet clothes."
Ranger was another term for wanderer; different people had different names.
"Can you confirm when Lisbon plans to lure the Snow Ghosts to attack?"
"Probably within these few days. They're already preparing, and they need to act quickly. Otherwise, the threat of Snow Ghost invasion will be much smaller once the warm season arrives."
The Dragon Sleep Continent didn't have distinct seasons. The power of the Snow Demons and Dragons clashed, causing alternating periods of ice and warmth in various regions.
During the ice periods, Snow Ghosts ran rampant. During the warm periods, Snow Ghosts were much more subdued.
After all, the Dragon's power spread beneath the Guangguang River Valley. If Snow Ghosts entered here during the warm season, their strength would be reduced by more than half.
"How many people are in the Xiangshui River Cave?" Russell asked another question.
"About five hundred or so. Lone Wolf is the only great ranger. There are five or six rangers, some wandering souls, and the rest are pitiable people." Wandering souls were those who had only nurtured a Battle Qi Seed, similar to a Knight's Qi Seed Stage.
"Seeing your attitude, the Wildcat Sisters don't seem to reject me as a lord. So, why do you live in the Xiangshui River Cave?"
Catherine lowered her head and smiled inexplicably, "No one can refuse their origins. We've lived in the Xiangshui River Cave since we were young. As for why, I don't know either. Perhaps the cave is dark and damp, but it's where I was born and raised."
Russell offered no comment on this.
I've asked all the questions I needed to, so I stood up and said, "Do you need me to arrange a room for you to rest?"
"No, thank you. If possible, please allow me to go back now. If I'm late returning, the Lone Wolf boss might find out."
"How will you get back? Do you need me to send someone to escort you to the border?"
"If Lord Russell trusts me, I can go back by myself." Catherine drank some hot water, feeling a little uneasy.
She didn't know how she would be treated.
"Russell..." Charles wanted to say something.
Russell gently raised his hand, stopping Charles, and looked calmly at Catherine. "Please use the main entrance when you leave."
"Okay."
A moment later, the bewildered Butler Morris saw Catherine out the gate.
Without taking the umbrella Morris offered, Catherine rushed into the rain and quickly disappeared down the cinders path.
"Russell, you shouldn't have just let her go. You can't trust what those cave dwellers say," Charles complained.
Russell smiled faintly. "Killing her or imprisoning her wouldn't serve much purpose."
He then dropped his smile and said seriously, "The most crucial thing now is that, regardless of whether Catherine was telling the truth or lying, we must prepare for the Snow Ghosts' attack. Teacher Eric, can our current strength handle it?"
Eric pondered for a moment and replied, "I'm afraid not, my Lord. It would be best to notify Baron Lord and ask Knight Captain Kendall to come and reinforce us."
Kendall, the patrol knight captain of the territory, was a Phantom Beast Knight.
With Kendall present, unless the Snow Demon itself invaded, no amount of Snow Ghosts could shake the territory in the slightest.
Charles nodded in agreement. "Yes, Russell, we can't be reckless about this. We should notify Baron Lord immediately."
When it came to life and safety, Russell naturally wouldn't act rashly. "Alright, I'll send a Knight Retainer to Fluorite Castle with a letter first thing tomorrow morning."
"Send someone now. Before that little wildcat gets back, let Knight Captain Kendall come over as soon as possible," Charles shrugged. "Who knows if that Catherine is a scout? What if the Lone Wolf, Lisbon, is right behind her?"
Russell agreed wholeheartedly.
Following good advice, he immediately asked Butler Morris to summon two Knight Retainers, Tom and John, and ordered them to ride to Fluorite Castle at full speed.
As the Knight Retainers rode away, Russell and the others had no intention of sleeping. They decided to play chess in the study.
"Russell, are you thinking of subjugating the cave dwellers of Xiangshui River Cave?" Charles, observing Russell's expression, had already noticed some clues.
"I do have such an immature idea."
"If you're asking for my opinion, I would definitely object. Those lowly commoners are not good stock. But if you've truly decided on this, I can only advise you to be cautious and carefully identify who among them has the blood of their own kind on their hands."
Russell nodded, made a move, and then said calmly, "I won't act blindly, and besides... my goal is to completely resolve the issue of Xiangshui River Cave."
