Ch. 842Woman in the Wind
Key plot points and events
- Chang Nian wakes exhausted after visiting Tong Guan at the sealed World Heritage Museum, where the statue at the Supernatural Location has vanished. She has forgotten her early-morning plan with Ji Li and appears unusually unwell.
- Ji Li tells her he plans to kill every one of the seventeen people named Nong Yueke in the city, along with their families. His reasoning: if the team eliminates the other namesakes and has one of its own members take the name, they may gain control of the mission’s Key Figure and its events.
- Chang Nian accepts the logic and joins him. Xiao Qian Duyue also comes along, though she disapproves of the plan. She says she can no longer see anything around Chang Nian, as though an invisible barrier blocks her sight.
- The group drives to a poor, half-demolished district to find their first target: a pregnant young woman with an intellectual disability. They encounter threatening residents; Xiao Qian distributes money, while Chang Nian violently punishes men who grope or harass them.
- Ji Li finds the young Nong Yueke in the district’s largest shelter, where she lies pregnant beneath a quilt beside a filthy man. He tears down the plastic covering, waking them both.
Character developments and interactions
- Chang Nian shifts from confused and physically depleted to alert and supportive once she hears Ji Li’s strategy. Her poor condition, doubled reflection, and Xiao Qian’s inability to perceive what surrounds her suggest something is wrong with her.
- Ji Li remains cold and pragmatic, choosing an extreme approach to seize control of the mission. He watches Chang Nian’s deterioration without openly reacting.
- Xiao Qian Duyue is quieter than before and morally uneasy about Ji Li’s intended killings, but remains committed to helping the group survive. She raises her concern about Chang Nian directly to Ji Li.
- The trio’s contrasting responses to the homeless residents reveal their roles: Xiao Qian offers aid, Chang Nian retaliates against abuse, and Ji Li stays focused on the target.
Significant themes
- Control and identity: Ji Li’s plan treats a name as a replaceable label, seeking to take command of the mission by claiming its central figure.
- Moral compromise: The group’s survival strategy involves mass murder, forcing a conflict between practicality and conscience.
- Vulnerability and exploitation: The first target’s disability, pregnancy, and circumstances expose the cruelty and abuse surrounding her.
- Unexplained danger: Chang Nian’s worsening condition and the barrier around her suggest a supernatural threat that the group does not yet understand.
