The Corruptors' attacks were becoming increasingly frequent.

Before this, aside from the first few centuries after the war began, there had always been intervals of anywhere from a month to several years between those freaks' large-scale attacks. Only small forces probing and clashing with them had filled the gaps. In the past three or four years, however, they had suddenly begun attacking more frequently. On average, a large-scale assault came once every ten days, and this time there had been only three days between the two waves of attacks—almost immediately after the Torrent of the End had destroyed their previous assault, the next one had arrived right on its heels. The soldiers on the defensive line had had no time to catch their breath during those mere three days.

The Guardian Giants' Legion Commander, Salamander the "Dauntless," stood on the defense platform above the hub. He watched the universe being illuminated by the warring sides' artillery fire and magic, their ghastly white radiance casting countless grim shadows across his heavily bearded face. The scene before him was almost a repeat of the battle several days ago: the Corruptors had arrived in overwhelming numbers, occupying nearly half the visible sky. They constantly used cannon fodder to wear down the hub's defenses and reduce the number of defenders, while leaving behind their corrupting taint, creating a longer-lasting and more terrifying threat to this battlefield. Meanwhile, the defenders' forces were far too few to halt the enemy's assault.

Salamander could also imagine what would happen next. He would have to activate Agudar's doomsday weapon again. The Torrent of the End would drive all the corrupt monsters from the battlefield as before, but to the enemy, that would be nothing more than a negligible loss. The doomsday weapon would
