A century ago, the Divine Path Alliance was the greatest organization in the martial world, renowned and unrivaled. However, the youngest son of the alliance master's wife at the time, Dugu Xingye, was actually a wisp of the Heavenly Demon's vital energy reborn. Born with demonic nature, he had his demonic eyes exchanged by Granny Mu, the master of the Divine Path Alliance's Mystic Sect, for the eyes of her own son. Thus, he did not become demonized before his coming-of-age ceremony.
However, the then master of the Snow Sect was later influenced by the fire soul within Emperor's Hate and severely wounded Dugu Xingye, causing him to lose his sight. His demonic eyes therefore regenerated, and during his coming-of-age ceremony, Dugu Xingye was deceived by an illusion of the Heavenly Demon. He mistakenly killed his parents and elder brother, after which the Heavenly Demon's aura controlled his mind, turning him into the Evil Emperor Xuantian. He then destroyed the Divine Path Alliance and founded the Evil Path Alliance.
Fourteen years later, the Evil Emperor Xuantian was sealed by the Ghost Valley Grandmaster with a unique formation. Before his death, his primordial spirit split apart and reincarnated as the present-day Niu Lang, while Dugu Xingye consequently regained control of his body. However, he did not regain his freedom until a century later, and he still called himself the Evil Emperor Xuantian.
After the Evil Emperor Xuantian was sealed, the Evil Path Alliance was destroyed. The Divine Path Alliance, however, was also blamed and hunted down by the various factions of the martial world, and lived in constant terror.
