In 3 BC, during the reign of Emperor Ai of Han, a great drought struck the land. A mysterious incident occurred east of Hangu Pass. The people fell into collective panic, abandoning their fields and tossing aside their hoes. Each held a stalk of grain, calling it the Queen Mother of the West's tally and claiming it had to be delivered to the imperial palace. Some let their hair hang loose, while others bared their arms and went barefoot. They traveled by day and night, hurrying along roads, through the wilderness, and between the fields as they passed the stalks to one another. The local authorities tried to stop them by arresting, suppressing, or beating them, but to no avail. In the end, several thousand stalks of grain and hemp, passing through twenty-six commanderies and states, were finally delivered to the capital and placed before Emperor Ai of Han.
Afterward, the people sang, danced, and recited scriptures in the alleys and fields, offering sacrifices to the Queen Mother of the West. Only in the autumn did they finally awaken from their great dream.

In 1518, a "dancing plague" broke out in Strasbourg, France. At first, a woman suddenly began dancing wildly in the middle of the street, drawing people to stop and watch. Later, others gradually joined her and danced alongside her, continuing through the night without rest. After one day, the dancers numbered thirty-four; after three days, there were more than four hundred. The local officials summoned physicians for consultation, but they had no solution. Several physicians and soldiers even joined the dance, continuing for days until they collapsed and died from exhaustion. After a month, nearly half the people in the city had died amid the mad dancing.
In 1960, the Massachusetts scarecrow incident occurred in the United States. A scarecrow appeared in a wheat field in the New England Highlands, though who had made it was unknown. Anyone who saw the scarecrow's eyes would stand rooted to the spot, with a vacant expression and a rigid body. Anyone who saw a person affected by it developed similar symptoms, which spread to those nearby. Within a day, the phenomenon had spread throughout the entire city and state. The military and state police were dispatched, but the outcome was unknown.
In 2005, students at a middle school in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, collectively dreamed of red-eyed spiders during their lunch break, causing panic. The students then began displaying symptoms such as twisted limbs, distorted brows and eyes, and tangled hands and feet. After investigating, experts claimed that the phenomenon was a symptom of bodily spasms brought on by mass hysteria. The next day, a gas explosion occurred at the school, destroying several school buildings. The casualties were unknown, and so were the survivors!
