The City Under Illusions (Part 1)

Under the night sky, shadowy pedestrians had already appeared on the streets of Qinggang Satellite City No. 2.

With the crisis over, the people who had hidden in underground shelters cautiously emerged. Carrying their children and supporting their partners, they walked home beneath the dim streetlights. Some, out of caution, would stay until the next morning before returning, but others were too anxious, or had things to take care of at home. Unable to wait until dawn, they made their way home.

Life was often greater than disaster.

What one had to do the next day was far more important than what had just happened.

"Then let's eat here?"

Lu Xin walked through the silent crowd of people heading home with Number Eight and the old security guard.

The orphanage couldn't be left unattended, so the simple-minded Teacher Lu hadn't come along. This was a gathering for the three men.

They wrapped their coats tightly around themselves in the night wind, and none of them spoke.

It was deep into the night, and the crisis had only just passed. Finding a place to eat wasn't easy.

As it happened, when they arrived here, they saw the restaurant owner returning from the shelter and opening the restaurant. Before they could ask, the owner understood what they wanted and immediately welcomed them inside.

"You want to eat?"

"Come on, come on..."

"What do you mean, it's too late?"

The owner was especially generous. "If customers come to eat, that means they're hungry. Since they're hungry, how can I not cook for them?"
