There were three targets: one Pope Solarian and four Cardinal Archbishops. The nobles had considered the reason for setting four Cardinals as targets as well. They might not be able to kill Pope Solarian, but killing four Cardinal Archbishops, along with the many clergy slain in the process, would be enough to calm the Empire's erupting volcano and save its face.

And without four Cardinal Archbishops, on top of those Cardinals who had died in previous years, even The Church would decline for many years. The Church of Light would naturally rise with the tide.
