"You're saying that the assassins who killed so many people last night came from the north?"
Duchess Vera trembled as she sought confirmation from Count Carmen.
"Yes. They had nothing to do with the Church of Dawn. They were a group of evil Northlands assassins. The Imperial nobles there have completely abandoned the honor and dignity of nobility, despicably murdering noble believers who serve Dawn."
"For the sake of victory, the Empire has committed every evil imaginable."
Count Carmen spoke with deep hatred, while Duchess Vera remained silent. Her trembling never ceased; fear had long since filled every corner of her mind.
On this land, or even throughout their past history, such a vile thing had never happened. Never.
No nobles had ever died in such great numbers. No nobles had ever died in such circumstances. No nobles had ever lost their lives because of war, much less because of someone else's war.
They had long heard of the conflict between the Empire and The Church, but it had been too far away for them to truly feel it. They only knew that the war between two colossal powers had destroyed an entire kingdom.
The tales from that distant land had already been horrifying enough. Now, with war so close at hand, they were utterly terrified. It was a horror they had never experienced before.
As a result, Duchess Vera paid no attention at all to what Count Carmen was still saying. After witnessing Knight Damon's rampage and last night's slaughter, she was truly terrified of this war on a land invaded by the Abyss.
Why had things turned out this way?
Hadn't they come to drive out and purify the Abyss?
Duchess Vera left the early breakfast in a daze. None of the nobles wished to linger either. A
