"Do you have a phone?" Spider-Man suddenly asked Eddie Brock.

"No. My phone was broken when the Life Foundation people captured me. Who are you trying to contact?"

Spider-Man had originally not wanted to trouble anyone else, but faced with a problem even trickier than calling in backup, he had no choice but to seek outside help.
