The two of them are still enemies—sworn enemies who won't rest until one of them is dead. What does whether that character is miserable or not have to do with the protagonist?
Is it just because the protagonist is the protagonist? So the protagonist has to help their family?
Do you think the protagonist is easy to talk to? That makes the protagonist a good person? A great philanthropist?
Then they simply shouldn't have come to surround and kill the protagonist, right?
They surrounded and killed the protagonist to repay a favor, then lost and were captured. Can they blame the protagonist? All that can be said is that they deserved it.
Also, don't get this wrong. The protagonist is not a good person. The protagonist is not a good person. Don't think doing a good deed makes someone a good person.
