He calmly met Meila's gaze. Several breaths later, he suddenly remembered something and hurriedly took out a canteen. "Have some water first. You seem to be showing signs of dehydration."
Meila did not refuse. She really did need it.
Although David's words had touched something in her heart, they had not made Meila lower her guard immediately. She had seen how, when a person was skilled at lying, they could keep lying until the day they died.
She did not readily believe what David had said, even though he had risked his life and returned alone, making his words seem so sincere. Perhaps a few hours ago, I would have been deeply moved by them?
That man had been the same, hadn't he? He had said so many, many pleasant things.
"By the way, where's Martin?" David asked when he saw that Meila was no longer as cold as before. "I remember you escaped together. Why are you the only one left now?"
David wondered if it was just his imagination, but in that instant, Meila seemed to have grown much colder... Her entire presence had suddenly turned icy, like a block of ice.
"That person is gone."
Her answer was utterly devoid of emotion.
Gone naturally meant dead.
David knew that both Meila and Martin had been born on this farm. Later, they had successfully escaped and become members of the Revolutionary Army, and the two of them had always been close... Martin's death must have dealt her a heavy blow. Was that why her personality had changed so drastically?
Or perhaps it was because she had gained power.
He wanted to find the source of Meila's power... Perhaps he could take it for himself—just as he had casually stolen another dagger from that merchant.
See? Wasn't this simple?
