Qian and Kun were the two strongest departments within Xuanyuan Palace. The Qian Department was led by the Gongsun Clan, while the Kun Department recruited demonkind. One on the left and one on the right, they were Xuanyuan Palace's twin pillars.

The Kan trigram consisted of two Kan trigrams stacked together, with yang trapped within yin. It symbolized danger and peril—danger upon danger, layer upon layer of hazards, the dangers of Heaven and Earth.
Within Xuanyuan Palace, the Kan Department monitored both the inside and outside. Its members were hidden among those of the other departments, making it the most mysterious department. No one had ever known how many people belonged to it except its department head.
The head of the Kan Department did not necessarily have to be the strongest person in Xuanyuan Palace, but he absolutely had to be the person most loyal to Xuanyuan Palace. Yet the current head of the Kan Department came from the Gongsun Clan of the Qian Department. He was the younger cousin of the Qian Department's head.
Some time ago, because of Gongsun Shiyu, the Qian Department head's son and the Gongsun Clan's pride, had caused a disturbance, a chain of events followed. The Gongsun Clan head voluntarily entered the palace's Cold Pool to receive punishment.
Although the various departments sympathized with the Gongsun Clan head, who had been dragged down by his son, the palace rules could not be broken. Aside from watching him enter the Cold Pool, the departments could do nothing.
