If two highly similar worlds, A and B, existed, then the Carol before him should have come from World B. In World B, she knew him as well, but the process by which they met and what happened afterward were not exactly the same as what had happened to himself and Carol in World A.
Of course, Director Wayne had no way to verify whether World B truly existed, but he believed that as long as the Carol before him was not completely insane, she had no reason to lie to him.
What would she gain from it?
Exactly. She had nothing to gain... She was already here, so what would be the point of making up such a bizarre story?
