At midnight, Song He slept for an hour on a folding bed in the corner of the laboratory.
As soon as he woke up, he heard one piece of good news and one piece of bad news.
"The program is finished!" Lou Jinghui cheered.
"Four more crab-eating macaques are dead!" Fan Tao shouted.
Song He sprang up. "Is it the noise-filtering program?"
"Yes!" Lou Jinghui said. "We analyzed the common noise from the monkeys' brains during the three hours after death, first identifying sixteen kinds of brain activity that wasn't noise. Then, combining that with the remaining chaotic noise, we created a denoising program!"
"Using this program to read the brainwaves of monkeys after death can eliminate eighty percent of the noise. Once we identify new brainwaves from the remaining data, it'll be much easier!"
"Excellent!" Song He nodded, but there was no joy on his face. Instead, he looked cautious. "Don't throw away those four monkeys that just died. Test the program on them!"
There were still ten people in the laboratory. They gathered around Lou Jinghui's computer, yawning.
Song He went over as well and watched Lou Jinghui hammer at the keyboard, feeding the data from the four newly dead monkeys into the program one by one.
As the program ran, an awkward scene unfolded.
