Background

“Teacher Bai” is the shared name used by multiple robots, rather than one individual. At the School of Pharmacy, units greet new students, carry luggage, and serve as teaching assistants. Each has a trained Teaching Assistant Intelligence Model and can connect to a Brain-Mimicking Supercomputer for help with complex situations 376.

Song He and Xiang Xiaotong later present a design built around replaceable tubes of artificial brain cells. The Second Generation is prepared for wider use through volunteer trials, a Robot School, and models with either mechanical or human-like exteriors 1260 1214 614.

Appearance

Teacher Bai can have a plastic-and-metal exterior or simulated human skin. Five demonstration units modeled on Ding Yangze look and move convincingly enough that volunteers do not immediately recognize them as robots 614.

Limits and care

• Teacher Bai needs electricity to move and nutrient solution to maintain its artificial brain cells. A newly delivered unit must receive its first nutrient solution within three hours 566 1499.
• Its ordinary auditory system interprets sounds through analyzed information, losing some detail. A prototype fitted with a Consciousness Mainframe and direct auditory input reacted instinctively to a finger snap, but needed further training to use its stored knowledge 525 580.

Ownership and Use

• Song He states that a unit’s wishes should be considered if an owner cannot repay a purchase loan: a unit that wants to stay may continue living with its owner while its earnings repay the debt 981.
