The test firing of the first nuclear bomb caused the "dark haze" to transform into "black rain," bringing about "mechanical pollution." Without all that, nuclear bombs would have brought peace before long.
After "mechanical pollution" appeared came the Post-Calamity Era. Several hundred years later, the various factions and races had basically stabilized.
