Background / History
Rin and his older brother, Itoshi Sae, once shared the ambition of becoming the world’s best strikers. After training abroad, Sae abandoned that goal to pursue becoming the world’s best midfielder and asked Rin to become the striker who would complete their World Cup dream. Rin rejected the change, challenged Sae, and was decisively defeated; Sae’s cutting remarks fractured their relationship and made surpassing him Rin’s central obsession. 189
Rin enters Blue Lock to defeat Sae and initially regards the other participants as beneath him. During the Second Selection, he tries to command Kira Ryosuke, Ariko Juubei, and Tokimitsu Aoshi into a team; Kira refuses, prompting Rin to leave with Ariko and Tokimitsu while promising to defeat Kira on the field. 38
His first major clash with Kira ends in defeat. The experience forces Rin into his destructive FLOW state and establishes Kira as another opponent he must overcome alongside Sae. 47 48
After the U-20 match, Rin becomes isolated, avoids his family, and devotes himself to solitary practice following his failure to defeat either Kira or Sae. 96
Personality
Rin is intensely arrogant, cold, and dismissive. He habitually treats teammates and opponents as tools for his own attacks, speaks in threats and insults, and trusts his own judgment over orders from others. 38 65
His obsession with defeating Sae and Kira fuels both his competitiveness and his volatility. In FLOW, this fixation becomes a destructive urge to expose an opponent’s strongest weapon and crush it with the same method. 47 71
Despite this, Rin gradually becomes more cooperative when victory demands it. He accepts Kira’s training instructions, begins creating opportunities for teammates, and responds strongly to Sae’s rare praise during National Team training. 188 189 190
Abilities & Skills
Puppet Strategy
Rin uses his spatial awareness, technical ability, and football IQ to manipulate the movements of both sides. He creates situations in which teammates, defenders, and loose balls move toward outcomes he has already calculated.
- Uses teammates as decoys or “puppets” to draw defenders away from his actual scoring route. 65 169
- Predicts Shido Ryusei’s refusal to pass, Igaguri’s interception, and the ball’s resulting landing point to manufacture his own shooting opportunity. 175
- Can deliberately attract multiple defenders before passing into the space his movement created. 171
- His plans can be broken by exceptional individual ability; Kira disrupts a supposedly unavoidable attack by finding an uncalculated third option. 44
- Isagi can read Rin’s tendency to use Shido as bait and position himself to counter it. 177
Spatial Awareness and Superior Vision
Rin possesses exceptional spatial awareness, allowing him to observe player positioning, predict movement, and guide play across the field. He later develops Superior Vision with guidance from Roki. 42 170
- Tracks the field well enough to predict Niko Ikki’s positioning and exploit his balance during a feint. 44
- Uses blind spots in an opponent’s observation to steal possession, as he does against Isagi. 71
- Identifies traps, passing lanes, and shooting routes while carrying the ball. 170 172
- Allows him to play as an organizer or midfielder without abandoning his identity as a striker. 170
FLOW
Rin’s FLOW is a berserk state driven by his urge to destroy opponents. It sharply raises his speed, power, technique, and willingness to challenge stronger players head-on. 47 71
- In FLOW, he dribbles past Sae for the first time despite Sae’s superior technique and physical control. 71
- His early FLOW prioritizes destructive one-on-one play over efficient attacking routes or teamwork. 71
- The state places a severe burden on him; after confronting Sae and Kira, he is mentally and physically exhausted before halftime. 72
- He later learns to retain enough control to use Puppet Strategy and pass while appearing irrational, turning others’ assumptions about his madness into another weapon. 177
All-Round Football Ability
Rin is regarded as Blue Lock’s early overall number one, combining shooting, dribbling, strength, speed, spatial awareness, and tactical organization. 42
- Produces difficult right-footed swerving shots even when defenders deliberately block his preferred shooting side. 66
- Can use direct physical contact to challenge defenders, though Kira’s strength exceeds his. 72
- Improves his acceleration and running mechanics through training under Roki. 171
- Is selected as a full-back for an aggressively oriented National Team formation because he can attack, organize, and defend. 191
Relationships
- Itoshi Sae — Rin’s older brother and original football ideal. Their shared striker dream collapsed after Sae chose midfield, leaving Rin determined to surpass him; their coordination begins improving after Sae praises Rin during National Team training. 189 190
- Kira Ryosuke — Rin’s foremost rival. Kira refuses Rin’s authority, defeats him in the Second Selection, repeatedly stops his attacks, and later becomes the National Team captain whose instructions Rin agrees to follow. 38 48 72 188
- Isagi Yoichi — A tactical rival whom Rin initially treats as a pawn. Isagi’s growth eventually lets him read Rin’s plans, challenge his thought process, and use Rin himself as part of a scoring trap. 65 177 180
- Shido Ryusei — A hostile but effective attacking partner. Rin calls Shido a puppet and bait, while Shido rejects being controlled; their shared desire to win develops into mutual exploitation on the field. 169 173 175
- Roki — A coach whose guidance helps Rin refine his speed, leg usage, breathing rhythm, and Superior Vision. 170 171
Story Role / Major Arcs
Second Selection
Rin enters the selection as Blue Lock’s most feared overall player and immediately establishes a rivalry with Kira. He forms a team with Ariko Juubei and Tokimitsu Aoshi after Kira rejects him, then faces Kira’s team in a match that pushes him into FLOW but ends with Rin’s defeat. 38 42 47 48
Blue Lock vs. U-20
Rin views the match as his chance to defeat both Sae and Kira, who has joined the U-20 side. He leads Blue Lock’s attacks, uses teammates as bait, enters FLOW, and succeeds in dribbling past Sae; Kira ultimately clears Rin’s decisive shot, and Rin is removed at halftime after exhausting himself. 59 65 71 72 74
Rivalry with Bayern Munich
Following further training, Rin gains Superior Vision and refines Puppet Strategy with Shido as his primary attacking outlet. He repeatedly attempts to draw Kira out of Bayern Munich’s defensive structure, while Isagi increasingly recognizes and counters his calculated use of decoys. 170 175 176 177
National Team Training
Rin joins the National Team training program under captain Kira. Although he initially objects to Kira’s belief that every player deserves respect, he agrees to cooperate with the team’s system. Kira also mediates the brothers’ conflict, leading to improved coordination between Rin and Sae. 188 189 190
Rin is selected as a starting full-back in a hyper-offensive 4-3-3, a role chosen for his ability to contribute in attack, organization, and defense. He accepts the position to play alongside Kira and Sae while continuing to pursue the chance to surpass them. 191
