Ch. 1Bullied and Beaten
Key plot points and events
- Fifteen-year-old Fang Chen, an orphan with no Spiritual Root, works as a menial laborer at the Glazed Sword Sect. The other workers bully and beat him, leaving him bruised and hungry.
- Steward Cao Bin takes the workers to Thousand Bamboo Ridge to harvest valuable Exquisite Bamboo. The experienced workers grab the good machetes first, leaving Fang Chen only a heavy, rust-covered black sword among the scrap.
- When Fang Chen handles the sword, it vibrates and sends a cool current through his body, clearing his mind. He suspects it is unusual, so he hides his interest by taking two more rusty swords.
- Rather than start cutting bamboo, Fang Chen carries the swords to a secluded stream to investigate the black one. Its energy flows through him again and immediately relieves his aching shoulder.
Character developments and interactions
- Fang Chen is physically weak, isolated, and accustomed to mistreatment, but he is observant and resourceful. He waits rather than risk being trampled, recognizes the possible value of the sword, and conceals his discovery.
- Cao Bin is a harsh, impatient overseer who treats Fang Chen with contempt and orders him to hurry.
- The other workers exploit Fang Chen and take the useful tools, reinforcing his low status among them.

- Exclusion and apparent limits: Fang Chen’s lack of a Spiritual Root seems to bar him from cultivation and opportunity.
