About Mei Terumi

Mei Terumi possesses two Kekkei Genkai. From the original story, it can be vaguely understood that she is likely the first person in history to have two Kekkei Genkai.

There are only two possibilities for the origin of such dual Kekkei Genkai.

The first is being born with it, inherited from both parents, meaning she is exceptionally gifted.

Although this possibility is extremely low, like a legend, it's not zero.

After all, Kekkei Genkai are passed down through genes. If Mei Terumi's parents each had one Kekkei Genkai, it's not impossible for her to inherit both.

However, throughout the history of the Shinobi world, there have certainly been many instances of individuals with dual Kekkei Genkai marrying and having children. Yet, cases like Mei Terumi's seem to be unique to her, which is why I say this possibility is extremely low.

The second possibility, which I believe is the most likely, is acquiring it through later learning.

We all know that Kekkei Genkai Ninjutsu can be learned. For example, Rosshi's Lava Release was developed by referencing the Lava Release of the Four-Tails Monkey (Rosshi's profile clearly states that his Lava Release was acquired through later learning).

Then there's Onoki's Dust Release, which is a fusion of three nature transformations. This is a level higher than the fusion of two natures required for Kekkei Genkai, and even such Ninjutsu can be acquired through learning.

Therefore, the acquisition of Kekkei Genkai, which is a level lower, through learning is a certainty.

It's just incredibly difficult.

Take Kakashi, for instance. Specializing in Lightning Release is enough for him; there's no need to research Kekkei Genkai. Whether he could learn one is another matter.

And then there's Orochimaru, a universally recognized Ninjutsu genius. Does he lack the talent to practice Kekkei Genkai? Then why doesn't he?

The answer is: there's no need.

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. For example, Kakashi excels at Lightning Release, and his compatibility with Wind Release, which counters Lightning Release, is likely not high. Researching Wind Release would surely be time-consuming and laborious for him.

Instead of focusing on his specialty, Lightning Release, and wasting energy on other things, why would he do that?

Therefore, due to individual circumstances and the high difficulty threshold for practicing Kekkei Genkai, most Kekkei Genkai in the Shinobi world are inherited through clans, with very few people learning them independently.

Hence, I personally believe that the possibility of Mei Terumi acquiring Kekkei Genkai through independent learning is extremely high.

However, whether she was born with one and learned the other, or learned both later, is difficult to analyze.

Still, acquiring two Kekkei Genkai later in life would undoubtedly require more time and effort than learning just one.

Considering that she missed the prime time for marriage due to ending the Dark Era and rebuilding Kirigakure, it indicates she must have been extremely busy with work and didn't have much energy to spare for other things.

I lean towards her having only learned one, and being born with the other.

Therefore, in my setting, she possessed "Lava Release" early on and later learned "Boiling Release." (If you argue about which one she was born with and which she learned later, that's going too far!)

As for the reason she painstakingly learned a second Kekkei Genkai, I have a preliminary idea that I'll incorporate into the plot if there's an opportunity later.

Here, I must also mention "Dissolving Release" (Yōton), she wields "Dissolving Release," not "Melting Release" (Yōton)!

In Kishimoto's original setting, Mei Terumi wields "Lava Release," while Rosshi and Kurotsuchi wield "Melting Release."

We all know that Japanese people also use Chinese characters. Even we Chinese can easily confuse "溶" and "熔" if we're not careful, so it's not surprising that Japanese people would confuse them.

When Mei Terumi appeared at the Five Kage Summit, her "Lava Style" was a mass of crimson lava, which looked like "Melting Style." In reality, this was an oversight by the anime production team.

Please note, I'm not making this up. If you search for "溶遁" and "熔遁" on Baidu, you'll find special annotations.

Because Kishimoto forgot to communicate with the production team, they mistakenly believed he had written the wrong character and rendered the effect for "Lava Release" as "Melting Release."

This error was only corrected during the Five Kage vs. Madara battle.

When Madara used "Wood Style: Deep Forest Emergence," Mei Terumi used "Lava Style" once. That instance's effect was a milky white viscous fluid, which is the true appearance of "Lava Style."

Therefore, "Dissolving Release" and "Melting Release" are different things. I haven't confused them or made a typo.

Mei Terumi's "Lava Style" is a product of the fusion of water and earth nature transformations, a milky white viscous fluid with rapid solidification and strong corrosive properties.
