Background

Lin Yan began as a poor youth and butcher of Lin Jiang Ward. His early identity was deliberately kept separate from that of Wuchang, the formidable Heavenly Supervision Department officer he impersonated through disguise and concealment techniques. 10 93 94

After breaking through to the Essence Refining Realm, Lin Yan slew a spirit-infused demonic tiger through a diversion created with Paper Cut into Horse and a decisive saber strike. The tiger's death led to encounters with malevolent spirits, a red-clad woman, and a mysterious egg that attached itself to his arm; he severed and reattached the arm to remove it. 5 6

His repeated violations of the rules governing the Eerie Night drew the hostility of Malevolent Spirits. Duke Lu detected six residual anomalous energies upon him, including one associated with the red-clad figure, and predicted that Lin Yan might die within half a year. 9
