In less than thirty seconds after Edmund gave the order, the newly built city, which had only just begun to take shape, suddenly echoed with the sharp, urgent wail of alarms.
Because of the painful history of the Marauders' previous invasion, the New City was now laid out in concentric rings.
Ring after ring nested inward, and even if the Lightning Wall was breached by the enemy, there were still fortifications from which to counterattack and obstruct them.
More than ten thousand panicked residents fled the buildings, retreating toward the rear of the New City amid the ranks of wanderers.
At the same time the crowds retreated, the guards watching the entrance to the underground shelter also reported the situation.
In truth, with the arrival of the Metal Sigh Disaster, the separation between the surface and underground had already become nominal.
Under the disaster's influence, the thick, reassuring Super Alloy doors possessed less than one percent of their former defensive power.
Edmund and Tang En both knew this perfectly well.
But just like two vicious "dogs" barking at each other through a pane of glass, only to lose their nerve the instant the glass disappeared...
Neither of them had been foolish enough to expose this weakness. They had pretended not to know anything.
But now, even those who did not know had to know! If the army before the Lightning Wall broke into the New City, this fragile alloy wall would be unable to protect the people underground.
Perhaps a few charges from those terrifying Heavy Tank Lizards would be enough to bring the wall down.
And what awaited the Mole People would be a wanton slaughter with nowhere to flee!
"Yes, yes, we have to awaken Lord Hades immediately. There's no room for discussion this time!"
