A Ninja Sword appeared in Han's hand. After a brief moment of thought, Han decided to test the waters first and gauge his opponent's strength.
If Hidan had come alone, Han would have immediately brought out his full strength to fight him. But Kakuzu's presence forced Han to consider the possibility of a combined attack, and that cost him his chance to struggle.
Against someone like Hidan, if you brought out your full strength from the very beginning, you might still be able to put up a fight. But if you hesitated and tried to hold back some strength to deal with Kakuzu at the side, you would die horribly.
Unless you had a special method for dealing with Hidan, or possessed overwhelming strength that could crush him outright. Unfortunately, neither possibility applied to Han.
