Lady Meng Lu saw off the somewhat dazed Sabel, then, with elegant steps, returned to knock on the Door at the End.
"Come in." A lazy voice drifted from behind the door, as though weariness came naturally with every word.
Lady Meng Lu pushed open the door and saw Frod still bent over his desk, sorting through documents.
Frod briefly set aside the large stack of papers in his hands, lifted his head, and looked at Meng Lu. "Judging by how pleased you look, Sabel's answer must have satisfied you?"
"After learning part of the 'truth,' he has decided to pledge his loyalty to me." Meng Lu broke into a radiant smile. Naturally, she was delighted to gain such a powerful knight.
"Hadn't he already pledged loyalty to you? Otherwise, why would he serve as your captain of city defense?"
"This time was different. Sabel offered his knight's soul as tribute and swore to become a knight who protects Firstheart City." Meng Lu spoke with considerable pride.
Frod nodded in understanding. For a knight, swearing upon one's knight's soul was the most sacred of oaths. Before, appointing Sabel captain of city defense had merely been his job; now, Sabel had sworn to protect Firstheart City. That was faith.
No wonder Meng Lu was so happy.
"It seems your recent efforts acting as the judge between him and Tulas have had remarkable results." Frod casually teased her before asking why she had come. "From your expression, it seems you have some concern?"
At the mention of her purpose, Meng Lu's delighted expression gradually faded. "It's about Sheriff Tulas. Everyone knows his personality. Now that Sabel defeated Tulas in full view of everyone, I'm worried..."
"You're worried the position of sheriff will remain vacant?" Frod
