"But as a drug capable of turning the tide of war, once it lost an opponent like the Axis powers, its level of danger was no less than a nuclear threat in peacetime—perhaps even greater than nuclear weapons.

"That was because Compound V produced no nuclear pollution. It was 'natural' and 'environmentally friendly.'
