Trailing Real Madrid by six points put Barcelona under tremendous pressure. Yet less than half an hour after kickoff, they had conceded twice, and starting center-back Pique was forced off injured. Barcelona looked utterly miserable.
Although Coutinho pulled one back in the thirty-eighth minute, Levante scored three more after halftime to take a 5–1 lead over Barcelona and push them to the brink.

It was not until the seventieth minute that Messi on the bench finally lost patience. After coming on, he provided one assist and scored once, helping Barcelona overturn Levante 6–5.
Barcelona had fought desperately for the three points and preserved their six-point advantage, but it was still an ugly victory for them.
