Liverpool did not start Yang Yang in their home match against Wigan Athletic. Instead, he continued to sit on the bench.

That was because he was about to face two crucial battles, both away from home.

Benitez made quite a few rotations for this match, changing players from front to back. As a result, the team did not play smoothly, especially in the first half, which could even be described as rather poor.

Daniel Agger replaced Skrtel in the starting lineup. In the first half, the Danish center-back made a fine run from deep into the left side of the penalty area and assisted Kuyt's goal, giving Liverpool the lead.

The two sides then became locked in a stalemate. It was not until the second half that Liverpool began making substitutions.

In the seventieth minute, Yang Yang came on for Gareth Bale. The Welshman had clearly improved in this match. Although he still fell short of Liverpool's expectations, at the very least, he had shown signs of progress.

Not long after coming on, Yang Yang created danger repeatedly down the left. Especially in the eightieth minute, he combined with Gareth Barry on the left. Barry passed the ball back from the left side of the penalty area, and Yang Yang curled a shot from inside the top of the arc.

The ball flew straight into the bottom-right corner, extending Liverpool's lead to 2–0.

Three minutes later, Pennant assisted Kuyt for another goal, completing the Dutchman's brace.

In the end, Liverpool crushed Wigan Athletic 3–0 at home and continued their winning streak at the start of the new season.

After eight rounds, everyone was astonished by Liverpool's consistency.
