As Heluo watched, a colorless wind blade half a meter long flew silently through the night like a dagger offered by an assassin, slashing toward her slender neck.

Heluo's eyes widened slightly. She extended one pale, delicate finger and accurately tapped the wind blade.

"Crash!"

A sound like shattering glass rang out, and the wind blade instantly dispersed.

Heluo sprang up. A crimson, egg-shaped Energy Ball formed in her right palm. With a gentle toss, it flew toward the spot where the wind blade had come from, trailing a faint tail of flame.

As it neared its target, the Energy Ball exploded in midair with a bang. A massive crimson radiance spilled downward like mercury pouring across the ground, covering an area of more than a hundred square meters in the blink of an eye.

The darkness was driven away by the crimson glow. Grass and trees bent low as though covered by a heavy layer of snow, exposing the ambushers.

Richard, Bobobo Wei Qi, and Heluo looked over together and saw that the attackers were black snakes. The scales on their skin were crystalline and translucent, as if carved from crystal, blending perfectly into the night. Now, beneath the crimson radiance, they reflected a faint blood-red gleam.

They looked a little like black king snakes from Earth... Richard thought, and the relevant knowledge quickly surfaced in his mind.

Black king snakes belonged to the order Squamata, family Colubridae, genus Lampropeltis, and were nonvenomous.

Though they were not venomous, they could resist the venom secreted by other poisonous snakes and often fed on such snakes. That was why they were called king snakes, or emperor snakes.
