Background and History

Tsunade is Hashirama Senju’s granddaughter and a disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi. She left Konoha and spent years traveling with Shizune. By the time Uchiha Yuzuru sought her out, she was disillusioned with the village but reluctant to turn against her former teacher 43 141 142.

Yuzuru proposed that the Senju and Uchiha clans join forces to reform Konoha. Tsunade initially refused, then accepted his offer of a medical-consultant position in Kumogakure. Her debts and hemophobia—which she said prevented her from continuing to earn money as a ninja—were central to her decision. The Third Raikage raised her annual pay to twenty million ryō, and Shizune accompanied her 141 142.

In Kumogakure, Tsunade documented her medical knowledge and arranged the village’s work before taking a trip with Yuzuru to the Land of Silence. She later entered a relationship with him and moved into his home with Shizune 151 172 173. After Konoha changed hands, she worked on its medical system and accepted Rin Nohara as a disciple. She subsequently took leave from the hospital during her pregnancy and later gave birth 259 260 262 280.

Personality

Tsunade is outspoken and quick to challenge Yuzuru, particularly when his methods put others at risk. She objects to his destruction in the Black Market because civilians live there, and witnessing a public killing leaves her visibly distressed 143 152 154.

She gambles persistently despite a striking losing streak. Her financial troubles are serious, but she does not neglect her medical duties: before leaving Kumogakure temporarily, she prepares written material and arranges for the work to continue 140 142 151.

Medical ninjutsu

Tsunade is regarded as the finest medical ninja in the Shinobi World. She pioneered the Medical Ninja system, including methods credited with reducing shinobi casualties 142.

• She treats Yakushi Nonō’s injuries and diagnoses Yakumo Kurama’s severe physical deterioration 177 268.
• She teaches Rin Nohara at Konoha Hospital and accepts her as a disciple after assessing her skills 260 262.
