Two fragrant, golden roast chickens were skewered on wooden sticks inside the kiln.

Daoji waved the tattered palm fan in his hand at the kiln's mouth, sending waves of roasted-meat fragrance drifting out.

Just then, the wooden door to Daoji's courtyard was pushed open by two monks, one thin and one fat.
