Background

Eldest Disciple of the West

Maitreya is the Senior Disciple Brother of the Western Teachings, ranking above disciples such as Mahasthamaprapta, Medicine Master, Lu Ya, and Ksitigarbha. His seniority prevents Jieyin and Zhunti from assigning him to the Netherworld, where they instead seek a suitable disciple to purify resentful souls. 86

Zhunti nominates Maitreya for the position of Heavenly Emperor, but Empress Pingxin questions whether someone who smiles foolishly all day is suited to rule the Primordial World. Haotian and Yaochi are ultimately selected instead. 91 Later, Jieyin and Zhunti consider assigning Maitreya as one of the Teachers of the Five Emperors, alongside Mahasthamaprapta, Medicine Master, and Lu Ya. 144

During the contest over a Human Dao representative, Tongtian dismisses Maitreya as “that little fatty who only knows how to giggle.” Jieyin defends his disciple’s constant smile as compassion for the world’s injustices and his large belly as a symbol of tolerance. 171

Netherworld Scheme

Maitreya joins Mahasthamaprapta and Medicine Master in proposing that Ksitigarbha use the Buddha Kingdom in the Palm to contain and nurture souls for incense merit. Ksitigarbha refuses because the plan conflicts with his vow to guide souls into reincarnation. 177

After the refusal, Maitreya accepts the Six-winged Black Mosquito’s proposal to secretly divert one hundred out of every ten thousand souls guided by Ksitigarbha. He contributes a Divine Pearl capable of concealing a person’s form and aura from all but Saints. 177 Shi Yu later exposes the Western Teachings’ collection of human souls while confronting Maitreya at Spiritual Mountain. 186

Investiture of the Gods

Entrusted by Jieyin with the Western Teachings’ interests during the Kalpa, Maitreya receives Mahasthamaprapta, Medicine Master, Sunlight, and Moonlight as subordinates expected to follow his command. 261

After Sunlight and Moonlight are killed, Maitreya uses calls for revenge to rally Western disciples and lead them to Xi Qi. He isolates Lu Ya by accusing him of abandoning the sect, reassures Mahasthamaprapta with intelligence from Chang Er Ding Guang Xian, and presents the campaign as a chance to help Ji Fa seize the Human Emperor’s position. 298 299

Maitreya, Lu Ya, Mahasthamaprapta, and Medicine Master battle Kong Xuan and Golden Peng. When four more Quasi-Saints arrive as reinforcements, Maitreya attempts to overwhelm the two brothers with an eight-Quasi-Saint encirclement. 307

The campaign ends disastrously for Maitreya’s faction: the Nine Bends Yellow River Great Formation cripples their cultivation, and they are eventually released from the eighteen layers of hell as mortals who must reincarnate and cultivate anew. 346

Contest for Buddhist Leadership

Though Jieyin and Zhunti acknowledge Maitreya as their first disciple and say he has made great contributions, they pass him over for the leadership of Western Buddhism in favor of Randeng. They later suggest that the position of Buddha Ancestor rotate to Maitreya after Randeng’s term. 346 351

Maitreya is elevated as the Future Buddha, standing on equal ceremonial footing with Randeng but lacking equivalent authority. He publicly invokes the sacrifices suffered by his faction during the Investiture of the Gods. 352

Shi Yu exploits Maitreya’s resentment toward Randeng, praising his “Buddha-nature” and promising to teach him how to secure the position of Lord of Buddhism. Maitreya accepts the guidance despite recognizing that Shi Yu is using him to deepen internal Buddhist conflict. 353

Shi Yu later reveals that Buddhism’s foretold prosperity will be followed by the rise of demons under Jinnara/Wutian. He gives Maitreya the Twelve-grade Pure World White Lotus and tells him that, once Tathagata is gone, the Future Buddha will have his chance to ascend. 380

Rise of the Demons and Ascension

During Wutian’s takeover of Spiritual Mountain, Maitreya initially rallies his faction to fight for the Buddhist Gate. Once imprisoned and sealed, he unveils the Twelve-grade Pure World White Lotus, removes the Black Lotus seals from himself and his closest allies, and escapes with Lu Ya, Mahasthamaprapta, and Medicine Master. 605 609

Maitreya locates Randeng at Spirit Vulture Mountain, coercing him to emerge by threatening to reveal their location to Wutian. 614 Using the Pure World White Lotus to evade Wutian’s detection, Maitreya leads his group back into Spiritual Mountain, restores Juliusun Ancient Buddha’s power, and receives recognition as the Future Buddha Ancestor. 617

After freeing more imprisoned disciples, Maitreya accepts the title of Buddha Ancestor despite initially protesting that he does not seek it. His followers relocate from Spiritual Mountain to a great snow mountain in Beijuluzhou, creating a separate Buddhist power base. 618

Great Snow Mountain Buddhism

As Buddha Ancestor, Maitreya visits Tang Sanzang in Chang’an and supports the creation of Middle-Vehicle Buddhism. Privately, he intends for his Theravada Buddhism and Tang Sanzang’s new sect to balance Rulai’s Mahayana Buddhism. 626 629

Maitreya and his faction attend Middle-Vehicle Buddhism’s establishment ceremony, gaining Heavenly Dao Merit. A separate pillar of merit is attributed to Maitreya’s Great Vow, prompting Zhunti to praise him as the Western Teachings’ greatest disciple. 631 632

In the Mortal Realm, Maitreya establishes a temple in Suzhou-Hangzhou with Shi Yu’s assistance. While operating the Sleeping Buddha Temple, he arranges for Li Xiuyuan—the reincarnation of the Dragon-Subduing Arhat—to be drawn toward his sect. 684 687 688

Behind this demeanor, he is politically calculating. He turns the deaths of Sunlight and Moonlight into a rallying cry, uses Yellow Eyebrow to pressure Lu Ya, and relies on intelligence from infiltrators to convince his followers that the Xi Qi campaign is safe. 298 He is acutely conscious of status, resenting being passed over for Buddhist leadership and feeling insulted when assigned as a mere congratulatory guest at Ao Lie’s engagement ceremony. 346 379

Maitreya is ambitious but cautious. He accepts Shi Yu’s assistance only after weighing the coming demonic calamity and the possibility that he may otherwise never become Buddha Ancestor. 380 Once in power, he supports Tang Sanzang’s Middle-Vehicle Buddhism not solely out of magnanimity, but also to form a counterweight against Rulai’s Spiritual Mountain. 629
