Background

Verz was born with an uncontrollable calamity power that killed every member of her family. Its growth formed a vicious cycle: the more misfortune she spread, the stronger she became, and the stronger she became, the wider her calamities spread. The burden of those deaths left her exhausted and at times willing to risk her own life. 161

Her calamity functions as a rule of the world: only fellow witches are naturally immune. Before Elysion could shelter her, the Ice Snow Empire was one of the few places capable of suppressing its spread because it was ruled by a witch; later, a witch’s Creation Domain offered the same protection. 54 161

Several kingdoms attempted to exploit this danger by sending Death Warriors disguised in Uruk mage robes to attack her home, intending to blame Uruk and lure her there. Verz remained unharmed while the attackers were overtaken by their own misfortune; Hekate later revealed the plot and warned her away from Uruk. 51

After arriving at the Ians Republic’s border, Verz sought out Hekate out of curiosity about the former Star Witch’s Star Bridge ability. Hekate let her stay in the Astrology Tower, where Selena immediately recognized her as the Calamity Witch and became afraid of provoking her. 137 138

When the New Alliance emerged, Verz chose to join it rather than simply sabotage it. Her presence brought meteors, magical-beast sieges, and repeated defensive-array failures to the alliance stronghold. After the Fire Demon Duke recognized her anomaly and threw her millions of kilometers away, Hekate rescued and healed her. 151 157 160

Hekate encouraged Verz to travel, form connections, and record the world rather than remain defined by her past. Verz accepted the advice and developed a favorable impression of Hekate; she subsequently traveled widely, collected experiences for her writing, and occasionally returned to Elysion. 161 206
