Jing Yang chose the crowded, chaotic amusement park mainly because it was on the outskirts of the East Coast Town District, and he was closer to the park.
Just as Jing Yang had observed with the help of the bird, this amusement park covered a vast area. There was no admission fee at the entrance; different attractions inside were probably ticketed separately. Around the varied amusement zones were commercial streets of all sizes, restaurants, malls, small hotels, cafés... Small as it was, it had everything.
"Not talking about you." Jing Yang petted the chirping Gray Bird on his shoulder, the little fellow he had named Little Rock Sparrow.
He looked up at the sign above the storefront in front of him. "Elf Hotel."
As he stepped into the hotel, the spacious, brightly lit dining hall greeted him with the fragrant aroma of food. Half the seats were occupied. At the tables, men and women, young and old, chatted and laughed. They had clearly come in to eat and rest after tiring themselves out at the amusement park. Some seemed to be tourists specifically visiting the place, holding up their phones to photograph the food on their tables and the amusement park scenery outside the windows.
Wearing an ill-fitting, cut-down short-sleeved shirt and rolled-up baggy shorts, Jing Yang looked every bit like a little vagrant begging for food. He swaggered inside, ignoring the strange looks cast his way from time to time. Picking an empty seat, he plopped down, his two dusty bare feet exposed, then raised his hand and called, "Any servers? I'd like to order over here!"
A waiter approached hesitantly, pen in one hand and menu board in the other. He looked Jing Yang over, then glanced toward the entrance. "Little friend, where are your parents?"
Jing Yang was speechless. Looking like this, even having a conversation was a hassle. It was not that people could not understand him; they simply would not take the words of a "child" like him seriously.
"I said I want to order. I'm starving!" He pulled out his Hunter License with one hand and laid several banknotes on the table with the other. "You got a lot of questions? Keep them to yourself. I'm not answering any."
The waiter choked, taking the Hunter License from the boy with uncertainty and inspecting it repeatedly. It truly did not seem fake. In fact, no one could forge a Hunter Association license in the first place—the five strongest nations in the world stood behind the Hunter Association. Considering that those mysterious Hunters could not be judged by common sense, the waiter immediately changed his attitude. Returning the license to Jing Yang, he said politely, "My apologies. What would you like to order?"
Jing Yang did not put on airs, either. The cash he had taken from Muser's wallet amounted to less than 200,000 Jenie in total. Converted to the currency from his previous life, it was probably only a little over ten thousand. He was not at the point where he could throw money around just yet, so he casually ordered some filling, generous-portioned, reasonably priced dishes, along with a serving of local seafood fried rice. It came to only 1,699 Jenie.
The food arrived quickly. Jing Yang immediately devoured it, while also scattering some rice across the table. Little Rock Sparrow happily lowered its head and pecked at the grains, tapping the tabletop with loud knocks. It was not shy at all, hopping over to Jing Yang's soup bowl to drink from it, only for Jing Yang to knock it head over heels with a chopstick. He took a cup and poured some soup into it for the bird. Little Rock Sparrow tilted its head at him. It was unclear whether it was simply muddleheaded or did not dare hold a grudge, but it pecked at the soup with little popping sounds, seeming to do so even more vigorously.
Full and satisfied, Jing Yang paid the bill and left. Feeling the tattered clothes on his body, he decided to find a mall and get himself a new outfit first.
At a mall in the amusement park, much the same scene played out. Only after Jing Yang showed his Hunter License did he successfully buy two sets of short-sleeved shirts and shorts, several pairs of underwear, and a pair of sneakers—he finally had shoes to wear. Was that so hard?!
With tears in his eyes, Jing Yang lamented to himself as he bought some disposable toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, and body wash.
After leaving the mall, Jing Yang went straight to a public restroom in the amusement park. It was fairly clean and properly maintained, without much of an odor. Completely unconcerned with anyone else, he stood at the sink in nothing but his newly changed underwear and took a quick wash, lathering his head with shampoo until it was covered in foam. The men, women, boys, and girls coming out of the restrooms on either side stared at him in stunned disbelief.
How did that saying go? As long as you were not embarrassed, it was everyone else who would be embarrassed.
After rinsing his hair, Jing Yang went into the men's restroom, changed into dry underwear and the new shirt and shorts he had bought, and felt completely refreshed.
"What are you all looking at?" He waved a hand. "All right, move along."
Even after Jing Yang strode away, people were still talking about him. The question raised most often was whether they should call the police. That kid did not look like he came from any decent family! He was way too wild!
With his stomach full, his body cleaned up, and his whole self feeling light, Jing Yang whistled and called Little Rock Sparrow back down from the sky. The little thing had been bullying a boy licking ice cream in the amusement park. Relying on its nimble flying skills and unafraid of getting hurt, it really dared to court death in every possible way. It had nearly been swatted out of the air by the boy's burly father.
And so, Jing Yang strolled through the crowd-filled amusement park of Hunter World with his bird, listening to the unfamiliar yet understandable language of this other world. It gave him the disorienting feeling of traveling abroad.
"Chirp chirp!"
Little Rock Sparrow stood on Jing Yang's shoulder, looking toward the crowd behind him while flapping its wings against his cheek.
"All right, I noticed them a long time ago." Jing Yang flicked the Gray Bird with a finger. "Those idiots have been following me ever since I left the mall. They probably saw my Hunter License."
Little Rock Sparrow pecked Jing Yang's finger twice in dissatisfaction, as though saying: I gave you such a clever warning. Shouldn't you praise me and get me something tasty?
What Jing Yang was actually thinking was whether he should deliberately let the blind idiots tailing him continue following, then turn around and rob them of their bird money instead.
"Better get settled first. I still don't know whether there'll be any follow-up pursuit from the ship..." Jing Yang considered it and resisted the temptation to make some easy money. "Someone as handsome as me should keep a low profile first."
The few local thugs tailing him only felt their vision blur for an instant before their target vanished.
"Where'd he go?"
"Damn it! I thought we'd struck it rich and could pick up a Black License for free!"
"That little brat got lucky. Getting robbed by us would actually have been a good thing... Holding such a precious license, sooner or later he'll be devoured so thoroughly by real villains that not even his bones will remain..."
The thugs grumbled indignantly as they searched all the way to a fountain, but found nothing in the end. With sighs, they dispersed.
Behind the fountain, Jing Yang pressed Aura into his ears, strengthening his hearing enough to catch every muttered word from those followers.
"Black License?"
He jumped down from behind the fountain.
It was said that among all those who passed the Hunter Exam, nearly one-fifth could not even hold on to their own licenses. It seemed these licenses that flowed into the black market were called Black Licenses.
"Genuine Blue Moon Pearls! Blue Moon Pearls found only in the Fanged Moon Tiger Habitat! Don't miss out, folks!..."
The mention of Fanged Moon Tigers amid the noisy cries of vendors caught Jing Yang's attention.
Around this large amusement park, there were plenty of Fanged Moon Tiger-related tourist souvenirs for sale: plush dolls, piggy banks, pendant charms, stickers, tattoo services... You name it.
Jing Yang went over to inspect the vendor's stall. Judging by their sheen and material, these so-called Blue Moon Pearls were not even one ten-thousandth as beautiful as the jade-like glow cast beneath moonlight by the fur markings on Wu Er's body. He immediately lost interest. Ignoring the vendor's attempts to keep him there, Jing Yang turned and left.
He soon stopped at a fork in the road, where a signboard displayed a map of the entire amusement park.
What caught Jing Yang's attention was not the map itself, but a line of text in the corner.
"Blanche Company · Ghost Island · Elf Amusement Park"
Jing Yang was completely baffled.
What the hell was Ghost Island? And what the hell was Elf Amusement Park...
If he had not already started practicing Nen Abilities, he would have thought he had transmigrated into the world of Pokémon.
"Blanche Company... isn't that the company they mentioned in the protected area?" Jing Yang muttered. "This protected area is their business too?"
"You're right, little friend." A voice approached from beside him. Jing Yang turned and saw that it was two amusement park security guards.
One guard bent down and squatted, asking kindly, "Little friend, where are your mom and dad? Did you get separated from them?"
"They were eaten by a tiger in the protected area."
"Uh..." The two guards choked on the spot. How were they supposed to respond to that?
"Chirp chirp!" A Gray Bird suddenly fluttered in front of them. As they repeatedly backed away and waved their hands to drive it off, the boy from moments ago had already disappeared.
Ghost Island?
Thinking about that place name, Jing Yang could not help recalling the ghostly figure of the pale boy who had flashed past in the woods outside the protected area a few nights earlier.
"Chirp chirp~"
Little Rock Sparrow flew back, circling in front of Jing Yang with the buoyant tone of someone taking credit for a job well done.
"Once I'm done surfing the web, I'll buy you some feed."
Jing Yang found a place that looked like an Internet Cafe. As he walked inside, he muttered, "I found you to be a tool bird. Why do I still have to spend money on you? One day, I'll stew you into soup!"
What exactly was Ghost Island? Where in Hunter World, in which country, was it located? And what year, month, and day was it today...
Jing Yang had far too many questions.
Fortunately, Hunter World was a modern society that had entered the internet age. There was no problem that could not be solved by surfing the web.
If there was, then he simply was not surfing professionally enough.
"Attendant, get me a computer!" Jing Yang slapped his Hunter License down on the counter of the Internet Cafe.
