Background / History
Jing Yang awakens after transmigrating into the body of a small child, buried beneath corpses in a desolate wilderness. Facing three wolves, he instinctively creates a rose-gold pentagram mark on one wolf and controls it to survive. He soon realizes that the body he inhabits is several years old, while a nearby bundle appears to have contained a newborn, leaving the original circumstances of his transmigration unresolved. 1
He names his first ability Star Mark and discovers its requirements: a pentagram must touch the target's exposed body surface while covered by his aura. Marked targets can be commanded or possessed, gain powerful regenerative abilities, and can be released when Jing Yang removes the mark. He also places a mark on himself, gaining its healing effect and protection against hostile Manipulation. 2 3
After surviving in the wilderness with Wu Er, a Fanged Moon Tiger, and several controlled animals, Jing Yang begins formal Nen training. He rapidly establishes fundamentals in the Four Great Principles and develops a training style that includes issuing himself instructions through the Star Mark on his neck. 9 27 28
Jing Yang later enters Heaven's Arena under the name Zenyu, seeking practical combat experience rather than rapid advancement. He defeats opponents through the 200th floor, challenges Wing, and eventually defeats Mong Linqi = Zoro to claim the title of Floor Master of the 244th floor. 79 93 158 160
His encounter with the True Martial King profoundly changes him: his body rapidly matures to roughly twenty years old and 1.9 meters tall, and he receives a Nen-absorbing sword aura refined from an octopus Nen Beast. 199
After establishing a Vow to never kill for Death Aura, Jing Yang gains direct control over the Death Aura within him. This manifests as a panel that lets him observe his Nen quantity and use Death Aura to improve his affinities. 200
Later, exposure to a strange island aura transforms Jing Yang into a three-headed, six-armed form and leads him to develop Natural Type Nen, a seventh category that draws on natural aura. He eventually seeks seclusion to understand and reverse the physical transformation. 381 384 385
Appearance
Jing Yang initially appears as a frail child of roughly three or four years old, smaller than an adult wolf. During his Heaven's Arena title match, he is a slender youth just over 1.5 meters tall. His body later rapidly matures into that of a roughly twenty-year-old man standing about 1.9 meters tall. 1 158 199
- Rose-gold pentagram Star Mark commonly placed on the back of his neck. 3
- Crimson eyes when entering his Scarlet Eye Specialist state. 90
- Later develops two additional heads and four additional arms, producing a three-headed, six-armed form. 381 384
- Can alter his form through Seventy-Two Transformations, including becoming a Great Peng Bird. 243
Personality
Jing Yang is intensely curious about Nen and treats its rules, restrictions, and unusual applications as problems to investigate. Even shortly after awakening in an unfamiliar world, he experiments with his ability rather than remaining paralyzed by fear. 1 3
He is persistent and highly self-directed in training, using repetitive Ken practice, automated Star Mark instructions, and combat experience to increase his strength. When his methods become inefficient, he actively seeks alternatives instead of accepting a plateau. 27 76 157
Despite possessing a coercive Manipulation ability, Jing Yang generally prefers to defeat strong opponents without relying on Star Mark. Kurapika interprets this as evidence that Jing Yang's ability is more naturally inclined toward cooperation than domination. 114
He is protective of companions and animals under his care. He entrusts Wu Er to Shiro rather than abandoning the tiger, works to retrieve Kurapika's Scarlet Eyes, and uses Nanika's free wish to let her speak normally rather than benefiting himself. 44 183 274
Abilities & Skills
Song of the Earth / Star Mark
Jing Yang's primary Manipulation ability creates a rose-gold pentagram mark on a living target. It allows him to command, possess, monitor, and heal marked targets. 1 2 3
- Requires a pentagram symbol to touch the target's exposed body surface while Jing Yang's aura covers it. 3
- Can be formed using hair, blood, or later directly materialized Nen. 1 230
- Supports first-person possession, third-person control, and verbal commands; separate commands do not overwrite unfinished orders. 2
- Allows him to control multiple people and creatures simultaneously. 83 271
- Marked living targets receive rapid regeneration, including recovery from severe wounds and reattachment of severed limbs. 3 154 183
- A mark can be removed by Jing Yang, immediately ending the control effect. 3
- Marks can also be placed on objects, though these act as remote aura anchors rather than controlling an independent aura-bearing target. 72
- The ability fails against targets protected from his Manipulation, such as Beyond's clone. 322 323
Shooting Star Like Wind
A combat and movement ability linked to the Star Mark on Jing Yang's neck. It lets his body react to danger before his conscious mind fully processes it. 146
- Automatically initiates evasive movement against sudden attacks. 146
- Combines with Ken and En for high-speed combat and detection of hidden opponents among illusions. 158
- Can transform aura into wind to reduce resistance and accelerate his movements. 322
- Its automated nature lets it respond faster than Jing Yang's ordinary conscious reaction. 146
Emission Techniques
Jing Yang develops ranged Nen attacks alongside his Manipulation specialization.
- Nen Bullet / Finger Flick Divine Art — Fires aura projectiles; he later produces ordinary Nen bullets casually and can generate considerable output with minimal charging. 11 28
- Flying Star Bubble — Carries a pentagram mark to distant targets and can be controlled within a five-kilometer range. 183 230
- Flower Payment Nen Ball — An ability designed around imposing a Nen debt, potentially forcing an overwhelmingly strong enemy into weakened Nen or Zetsu through repayment. 104 110
A Refined Gray
Jing Yang's Enhancement ability, developed from the Star Mark's healing properties. 215
- Nine Yang — Channels life-filled aura to heal injuries and repair damaged tissue, including severe spinal damage. 215
- Nine Yin — A combat-oriented concept that reverses healing into self-enhancement, steadily increasing the power of his punches and kicks. 322
- His healing practice can also activate another person's potential, though this application remains incompletely named and developed. 212
Nen-Drinking Sword
A sword aura refined by the True Martial King from Jing Yang's octopus Nen Beast. 199
- Cuts and absorbs an opponent's aura on contact. 199
- Replenishes Jing Yang's expended aura without increasing his total Nen Quantity. 199
- Can be wielded by the Taoist Nun Nen Beast. 247
- Later destroys the Voodoo Gourd and Jing Yang's Guardian Spirit Beast. 381
Taoist Nun
A jade-faced Nen Beast also called Zenyu, created by Jing Yang. 244
- Uses Sleeve of the Universe to store and summon people or items. 244 332
- Investigates locations and gathers clues, including Shizuku's room during the Hunter Exam. 320
- Creates Talismans by extracting or reproducing abilities from allies and Nen beasts. 255
- Can wield the Nen-Drinking Sword. 247
Seventy-Two Transformations
A cooperative transformation ability associated with Wu Er and later supported through Talismans. 236 243
- Lets Jing Yang take forms such as a Great Peng Bird for rapid travel. 242 243
- Consumes large amounts of aura; transforming into the Great Peng Bird costs roughly 10,000 aura from a 32,000-aura reserve. 243
- Can be extracted into Talismans for later use. 255
Upper Heaven Lower Hell / Searching Heaven and Earth, Below and Above
A Specialist ability born from Jing Yang's Vow concerning Death Aura. It appears as a system-like panel showing his Nen quantity, affinities, and Death Aura reserves. 200 323
- Jing Yang vows never to kill for Death Aura, gaining controlled absorption rather than indiscriminate acquisition. 200
- Death Aura can increase his Nen-category aptitude and total Nen Quantity. 200 208
- Raises all six standard Nen categories to 100% aptitude. 278
- Lets him track his current total Nen Quantity directly. 200
Natural Type Nen
A seventh Nen category developed after Jing Yang absorbs the strange aura surrounding an island. 384 385
- Absorbs and uses inexhaustible natural aura, distinct from his personal Nen reserves. 385
- Produces versatile effects including whirlwinds, chainsaws, flames, gum-like aura, and Nen threads. 385
- Enables Immortal's Touch, which shares a perception of natural aura and temporarily unlocks cultivation limitations for targets. 393
- Strengthens existing Nen abilities, including a vastly expanded Moon Mark range. 393
- Excessive absorption causes environmental decay around Jing Yang. 418
Soul and Life Manipulation
After transcending life and death, Jing Yang gains the capacity to affect souls and life forms directly. 436
- Saves Renko and Renji from dissipating. 436
- Collects Meruem's residual soul and Netero's spirit after their battle. 436
- Merges the two essences into a new life form. 436
