Back then, before the Old World was sealed off, its daily birth rate was extremely high, and not every Sick One was granted the right to normal survival.
Most people afflicted with inferior diseases or born with disabilities had no right to continue living in the Old World. They might even be taken away as slaves, livestock, or food while simply walking along.
Therefore,
these hopeless Sick Ones would make certain special choices. Becoming a Pilgrim of Suffering was one way to change their lives.
The Old World also had explicit regulations. Anyone who set foot on Pilgrim's Avenue would be protected by the Monastery, and any killing committed on this road would draw the attention of the Monks.
Likewise, those who had no intention of making a pilgrimage and had merely come here to seek refuge, disturbing the other pilgrims, would also be punished.
If a pilgrim could endure the suffering and walk the entire road with a pious attitude, they could become a member of the Monastery and gain the right to undergo Chain Implantation.
Accepting the chains meant acquiring a disease unique to the Monastery, becoming a Monk of Suffering, and completing a heaven-defying transformation of their fate.
But the current situation had changed completely.
Because of the blockade imposed by the Reproduction Rules, the population of the Old World no longer grew, and the so-called Pilgrims of Suffering had all but disappeared.
The Monastery was no longer as overcrowded as it had once been. It even had to forcibly recruit outsiders. Whenever they discovered humans from neighboring worlds with unusual bodies, they would capture them and bring them into the Monastery for special training.
