Test Subject
At the sound of a whistle, Yang Bo's face changed. The image formed in his mind by the whistle's sound waves showed that Wu Bing, who had just spoken to him, did not exist at all. Yet something about this area felt off.
In the direction of the fish pond, there seemed to be a Black Hole. A large section was pitch-black.
Yang Bo felt his legs trembling, but not from fear. Instead, he was excited, like how his legs had gone weak and unresponsive after a fight in the past.
Yang Bo took a deep breath, pulled out his tool—a shovel—and approached the fish pond step by step.
The fish pond was small, perhaps only three to five square meters in total. There was a Rockery inside, with moss and ferns growing on it. The water contained aquatic plants and more than a dozen little Goldfish.
Bang! Just as he neared the pond, Yang Bo swung his shovel and smashed it into the water. Without waiting to see the result, he charged straight for the courtyard gate. Right or wrong, running came first.
The instant he rushed out of the courtyard, Yang Bo caught a glimpse from the corner of his eye: the shovel had struck the pond, sending water splashing everywhere. A black fish appeared in the pool, hideous and vicious. It opened its huge mouth and sprayed a stream of water at Yang Bo.
The moment Yang Bo saw the black monster fish in the pond, he knew something was wrong. He hurriedly rolled across the ground and tumbled out of the courtyard.
Camouflage +4!
A message appeared in his mind, and Yang Bo froze.
Then Yang Bo kept running. Only after reaching a rock more than ten meters outside the gate did he stop, panting heavily as he looked back into the courtyard.
What he saw left him stunned. Wu Bing held a Short Sword, facing a large black fish. Its head was enormous, but it had neither a belly nor a waist, with only a fish tail behind it. Wu Bing's Short Sword was embedded in the fish's head.
"Yang Bo, come in." Seeing Yang Bo poke his head out from behind the rock, Wu Bing wiped away his sweat. If Yang Bo had died here today, he would have become a laughingstock.
"Brother Wu, is it really you?" Yang Bo still did not dare go inside, afraid that this Wu Bing might be fake, so he asked aloud.
"It's me. This time, I made a mistake. Come in," Wu Bing said.
Hearing that, Yang Bo shouted again, "Brother Wu, what did we do yesterday?"
"We went to help someone clear out their Garden."
"What did we eat for lunch..."
Only after Wu Bing answered did Yang Bo emerge. His legs were still trembling.
"I'm sorry. This time, it was my mistake," Wu Bing said apologetically when he saw Yang Bo's condition and sensed his racing heartbeat.
"Brother Wu, what is going on? My head feels like a mess." Yang Bo looked at the fish. Its head was nearly half a meter in diameter, while its body was only a little over a meter long. It looked horribly deformed.
"Take out the bag first. I'll explain everything after we clean this up," Wu Bing said.
Yang Bo took out the bag he had received. Wu Bing tossed the vicious large fish into it, then cleaned up the blackish-red bloodstains on the ground.
Wu Bing threw his gloves and the shovel Yang Bo had smashed into the pond into the bag as well. After sealing it, Wu Bing finally spoke.
"Come on, let's talk inside." Wu Bing carried the bag.
"Yang Bo, what I'm about to tell you is something you'd better not repeat outside. If you do, you'll disappear," Wu Bing said.
Yang Bo nodded, and only then did Wu Bing continue. "First, I need to tell you that humanity is not actually the ruler of the interstellar world. Humans are very insignificant in the interstellar world. If you don't believe me, go back and check how many Administrative Stars humanity has. Then you'll discover that several Administrative Stars have gone completely silent, because they have already been destroyed."
"Gene Evolution was not first invented by humans, but by Interstellar Creatures. You may not know this, but the planet-destroying technology humans created was not meant to target humanity. It was meant to deal with unknown extraterrestrial creatures."
"As for what you just saw, that was also caused by humans. The blood or waste products of some humans who underwent Gene Evolution can contaminate other living creatures, causing beasts to evolve as well."
"The most powerful creature humans have discovered in this world is indescribable. I don't know the details either, but I do know that an entire Main Fleet was crippled by it."
"Now let me talk about my work. In truth, I serve the wealthy. These rich people have their own interstellar spacecraft, so it would be difficult for you to imagine what unbelievable things might be in their collections."
"Among the plants in the Garden we cleared yesterday, I recognized thirty-eight species from the Interstellar Federation Endangered Species List. Ordinary people would face severe punishment for even touching those plants, yet in someone else's Garden, we cleared them away like trash."
"As for today's case, I don't know what happened to the owner of this place. My personal guess is that they died or something else happened. All we know about the employer is that they are a powerful Gene Evolver."
"You won't find any information about this fish anywhere. All I can tell you is that it is rated D-Class and possesses illusion and Camouflage abilities. This fish is also one of the raw materials for Gene Evolution Serum."
Hearing this, Yang Bo muttered to himself, This fish has two abilities, while I only gained one? "Speaking of Gene Evolution Serum, Yang Bo, surely you don't think those B-Class or even higher-ranked Gene Evolvers reached that level through their own hard work?"
"Wrong. What they used were B-Class or even higher-grade Gene Serums. Different Gene Serum Materials produce different grades."
"Your Gene Evolution failure, in my personal opinion, was probably because the Pharmaceutical Company had developed a new Gene Serum—or perhaps it was not a Gene Serum at all. You were merely a test subject, or they simply did not need that many Gene Evolvers."
Yang Bo's heart skipped a beat at that. Could the original owner have died for this reason? "Let me tell you another fact. Several hundred years ago, Gene Serums had already achieved a one hundred percent success rate. The only difference was in each person's results."
Yang Bo was dumbfounded, but when he thought about it, it made sense. If everyone succeeded in Gene Evolution, how would social class differences be displayed?
"Think it over carefully. If I hadn't been careless today and nearly gotten you killed, you might never have learned any of this." After speaking, Wu Bing waited for Yang Bo to process what he had said.
Yang Bo carefully sorted through it all in his mind before asking, "Brother Wu, is society really this dark?"
"Heh. Study some history and see what societies in the past were like." Wu Bing regarded Yang Bo in a new light. After hearing so much, this kid had actually remained composed.
When Yang Bo thought about it, that was true. As long as a society was made up of humans, it would inevitably have a dark side.
After waiting for a while, Wu Bing saw that Yang Bo still had not asked him anything, so he asked, "Is there nothing you want to ask?"
"Brother Wu, what level is your strength equivalent to?" Yang Bo asked out of personal curiosity.
