Huo Yushen entered the military without a powerful backing. By age twenty, he had transformed the Empire’s weakest Fifth Interstellar Fleet into its strongest, acting as commander-in-chief during an annihilation war against the Southern Cross Star Kingdom. His force destroyed three enemy fleets and killed their highest military commander, earning him promotion from captain to colonel. 292

He became a general at twenty-four. At twenty-seven, he destroyed the Southern Cross Star Kingdom’s remaining interstellar fleets and killed its Grand Duke, but the Cabinet ordered his withdrawal and a non-aggression treaty followed. He was subsequently transferred out of the front-line military into the Special Security Bureau, where he solved the prior Chief Inspector’s murder and purged foreign spies within a month. 293
