"Tell me, what's the point of living, Xiao Lin?"
This was the second time Lin Li had heard that question today.
But this time, it wasn't from a Depression Patient, nor was it from a guest at Chicken Farm. It was from the driver driving him.
And along with it came the car accelerating beneath him.
Fuck.
"Uncle, don't be like this. You're scaring me." Sitting in the back seat, Lin Li silently fastened his seat belt.
Where the hell had he been taken? Was this still a police car? Wasn't this a fucking hearse? He'd merely been curious about the profession of Demon Suppression Envoy, so he'd asked Yang Liang how much he made, whether he worked much overtime, whether there was much room for promotion, whether work reports and briefings were easy to write, whether the disputes he handled were simple, and a few dozen other minor questions. There was no need for his mood to change this fast, was there...
His mental resilience was worrying.
Yang Liang gave Lin Li a deep look through the Rearview Mirror. "If you're scared, shut up."
During their earlier conversation, he had said that he'd already gotten off work and gone home, only to be called out for temporary overtime.
And Lin Li had actually asked him why.
Why? Why didn't the "main culprit" behind his overtime know why?
Lin Li stopped talking and watched the streets slide backward beyond the window, though he was actually checking the system.
Task Two had yet to notify him that it was complete. After thinking about it, Lin Li figured the Demon Suppression Division probably still needed to follow up. After all, some Joyful Union Demons who had gone home after work still hadn't been caught, so it didn't yet qualify as a "complete purge."
He hoped that was the case.
In any event, he had already done everything he possibly could. Still, he felt somewhat disappointed and dejected. He had thought he would finish it right away.
He let out a soft sigh.
"This is your neighborhood, right? Get out. Hurry home so your parents don't worry. Also, say hello to your parents for me. And while you're at it, tell them to make another account. You little brat are completely beyond saving." Yang Liang slowly brought the car to a stop, unlocked the doors, and joked with Lin Li.
"Okay, thanks, Uncle. But don't worry. My dad's already gone, and my mom works out of town. I'm the only one at home, so no one will be worried. As for making another account, that's even less possible." After saying that, Lin Li jogged home.
It was only close to nine, but he had to get up early tomorrow. Besides, he still needed to look up some information for the first chapter of the Body Tempering Eight Section Exercise, so Lin Li was still quite busy.
Yang Liang, who had been about to get out for a cigarette to relax, trembled slightly, and the cigarette fell straight to the ground.
He then reached out with a trembling hand, put the cigarette between his trembling lips, and tremblingly took out a lighter. He flicked it for ages without getting a flame.
Lin Li's answer still echoed in his ears, while before his eyes appeared the image of Lin Li's lost and dejected face, which he had only just noticed.
Before this, he had never seen such an expression on Lin Li's face.
How sad. How heartbroken.
He turned to look at the lonely figure in the distance, silently running toward the neighborhood. His lips moved, but he didn't say a word.
Three seconds later.
Smack!
Yang Liang slapped himself across the face. "I really fucking deserve to die!"
What had that child looked like just now? Why had that smile that was always on his lips disappeared? His words had obviously stabbed straight into the kid's sore spot!
Yang Liang suddenly realized something. Perhaps Lin Li's absurdity wasn't his true nature at all, but merely a shell he had fabricated to protect his fragile heart! He was just a pitiful child hiding himself behind a smile.
Fuck, what had he said to a child like that?!
As a police officer, he had actually hurt a child like this! I really fucking deserve to die!
Completely unaware that his perfectly normal statement had been misunderstood—and that his absurdity was simply inborn—Lin Li was currently enthusiastically refining the modern-language version of the Body Tempering Eight Section Exercise.
Thanks to his efforts during the day, it didn't take much time.
Then, in his living room, Lin Li formally practiced the contents of the first chapter according to the Body Tempering Eight Section Exercise—he couldn't exactly read from a sheet of paper while practicing tomorrow, so he had to memorize it first.
The translation was correct.
This time, there was no showerhead above his head, and he didn't feel like peeing. There wasn't even a warm current, but Lin Li could genuinely feel a mysterious change arising from within his body, as though his sinews and bones had been opened up.
It wasn't that the effects were so exaggerated that one round of practice could produce results. The technique itself had stated that this was a cultivation method requiring time and sweat to accumulate.
More than that, it was an indescribable, mystical feeling that the future held promise. His body seemed to be expressing delight—boxing champion Tyson? He would eventually be nothing special!
If he practiced eight hundred times a day, maybe he really could become Saitama.
After taking a shower and having a simple video call with Mom as usual, Lin Li prepared to sleep.
10:20 p.m.
Lin Li stared at the ceiling.
Fuck, he'd been lying there for forty minutes and still couldn't sleep.
Although he had been quite tired this morning, after enjoying forty minutes at the Massage Parlor, he wasn't nearly as tired anymore.
And today's experiences had been far too novel. On top of finally being able to practice a technique that didn't belong to Earth, Lin Li's mind was somewhat excited.
It was the weekend, and his biological clock seemed unwilling to let him sleep at this hour.
Lin Li sighed. "I'll count sheep."
10:40 p.m.
"Five hundred sixty-two sheep, five hundred sixty-four sheep, five hundred sixty-five sheep, five hundred... Fuck, how many sheep was that just now?!" Lin Li abruptly sat up, wide awake.
Giving up somewhat, he picked up his phone.
The Group Chat where they usually queued together was still in voice chat, so he curiously tapped in.
The voice chat was overflowing with cheerful energy. Everyone was laughing and joking, though Lin Li seemed to hear something about someone's mother? Apart from mothers, classic lines such as "useless trash," "a chicken pecking randomly at a keyboard could play better than you," and "are you even human?" echoed throughout the call.
After listening closely, Lin Li determined that Bai Bufan was the only one among the five who was gentle and calm, saying nothing.
Case solved. He was the one being cursed at.
And they had started the game at 1–10, committing an unforgivable mistake.
Otherwise, he definitely would have been talking back.
A perfect opportunity. Lin Li slipped into the conversation and cursed Bai Bufan a few times amid the chaos.
"Lin Li, why are you here?" As the one being cursed, Bai Bufan keenly noticed Lin Li.
"Hurry, hurry, Lin Li, log in! Replace that animal Bai Bufan already. I can't take it anymore. He's become the tallest wall blocking our path to victory," the others hurriedly said.
"Don't force this slander. My favorite player said it himself: there's no champion called Wall in League of Legends. If you don't understand the game, don't commentate here." Bai Bufan stubbornly argued.
"No, I have something to do tomorrow and need to get up early. But I can't sleep right now, and there's no Melatonin at home or anything. I didn't know what to do, so I came up to check on you guys. Seeing you like this has put me in a much better mood." Lin Li declined.
"Are you even a Tieba user? You still need to ask about something like this? When in doubt, expand your territory—go fight a county on the outskirts."
That single remark jolted him awake!
Was there a possibility that after such an exciting day, it wasn't his brain that was excited, but his cerebellum?
Lin Li immediately hung up the voice chat and headed for the bathroom.
He entered a website address.
www.____.com.
Bai Bufan was a miracle doctor.
Lin Li was sleepy.
With a yawn, he lay down on the bed and closed his eyes.
3:20 a.m.
Lin Li...
Of course, Lin Li had long since fallen asleep. He was sleeping soundly and had already been asleep for nearly five hours. Before long, his alarm would even ring.
But someone else still couldn't sleep at this hour.
Several kilometers away, a woman getting up to use the bathroom discovered that her husband wasn't in bed. Rubbing her eyes, she found him smoking on the balcony at home. Looking puzzled, she asked, "Yang Liang, what are you doing? What time is it? Why aren't you asleep? Didn't we agree that you'd take the kid to the amusement park tomorrow?"
Yang Liang turned to look at his wife, his expression somewhat weathered.
"I want to go downstairs."
But he apparently had no intention of taking the stairs, nor did he intend to take the elevator.
His wife was startled by Yang Liang's state and hurriedly asked with concern, "What's wrong?"
Yang Liang slapped himself across the face.
"I really fucking deserve to die!"
