A Hefty Income

Madam Lisa began recounting Hobart's outstanding decisiveness today and that miraculous potion before the Count and Countess and Audrey.

Upon hearing about the miraculous doctor, Audrey suspected he was a Beyonder.

Since Hobart knew such a Beyonder doctor, could he also be a Beyonder? Unfortunately, she possessed too little knowledge of the Beyonder World to make a proper judgment. However, the Tarot Club would convene in three days, and she could ask Mr. Emperor for advice then.

This gentleman knew a great deal, and more importantly, he was easy to get along with.

After listening to Lisa's account, Earl Hall smiled. "He is a dependable young gentleman who knows how to seize opportunities."

He said to Audrey, "My dear, if you encounter any legal difficulties in the future, you may seek his advice."

"Father, that was precisely what I had in mind." Audrey smiled. "But before that, I must pay Aslan-Barton a satisfactory reward.

"Father, is there any way to give Mr. Hobart a larger tip? I believe he deserves it."

Earl Hall smiled. "Besides the payment to the Law Firm, you may designate a sum specifically to cover the Law Firm's expenses in this case.

"Usually, after deducting expenses, the Law Firm gives the remaining money to the Lawyer responsible for the case."

Normally, such matters were handled by the Butler. Earl Hall only needed to give an instruction to provide a certain Lawyer with a tip.

Today, in order to help his daughter understand the unspoken rules of Backlund society, the dignified Earl Hall had personally concerned himself with such a trifling expense of a few hundred pounds.

On Saturday morning, Hobart accompanied Lisa to complete Miss Hugh's release procedures.

When Xue walked out of the prison, she still found it hard to believe. "Mr. Hobart, it's truly difficult to imagine that you resolved everything in just one day."

Hobart smiled. "It was merely good luck. I happened to know a miraculous doctor who cured Veil's paralysis."

He glanced around the prison gates. "No friends came to pick you up?"

Xue gave a helpless smile. "She may not have received the news yet."

Hobart said, "Then please allow me to take you back to your residence."

Xue immediately declined. "Thank you for your kindness, but I would like to take a walk in the sunshine."

Her face looked somewhat youthful, making it easy to overlook the fact that she had struggled in Backlund for many years. She did not yet trust Hobart enough, so naturally she could not let him know where she lived.

"All right." Hobart thought, It seemed I wouldn't be meeting Miss Magician today.

Xue asked for Hobart's contact information. "If I encounter any legal difficulties in the future, I hope I can still receive your help."

Hobart nodded. "I look forward to your patronage."

Watching Miss Hugh leave on her two short legs, Hobart and Lisa finally took a carriage back to the Law Firm.

Lisa went straight to Barton's office, and Hobart guessed that she was settling the payment for this case.

It was nearly noon when Lisa finally left. Barton called Hobart into his office. "Miss Audrey is a generous lady. She paid the Law Firm 200 Pounds for its services."

Hobart immediately calculated it in his head. As a Lawyer Assistant, he could only receive 10 percent of the payment for now, which was 20 Pounds.

That was no small income. For cases like those of Mr. Henry and Mr. Robin he had previously handled at the Magistrate Court, he had received only 3 Pounds. After taxes, only 2 Pounds 12 Sule remained.

An ordinary Lawyer Assistant earned a weekly wage of 6 to 9 Pounds. However, when Hobart had joined the Law Firm, Barton had advised him not to take a weekly salary but instead receive a percentage. Hobart had followed the Great Lawyer's advice.

A Lawyer Assistant could receive 10 percent of the total payment. After becoming a senior assistant or a Lawyer, he could receive 20 percent.

If he became a Great Lawyer, he would either become a new partner of the Law Firm or establish his own Law Firm.

Choosing a percentage-based salary upon first becoming a Lawyer Assistant was quite disadvantageous, because it was impossible to encounter easily resolved cases every time. Sometimes, it took two weeks to earn only 3 or 4 Pounds.

But with Barton's support, income was no longer a problem at all. A single recommendation from him had earned Hobart 20 Pounds.

Seeing the joy on Hobart's face, Barton smiled as though watching a show. "Generous Miss Audrey also paid the Law Firm 80 Pounds to cover all expenses in this case.

"According to custom, after deducting the 34 Pounds 6 Sule 3 Penny you spent, the remaining 45 Pounds 13 Sule 9 Penny will all become your tip."

Hobart opened his mouth in surprise. "Th-this is a huge income!"

Hobart's reaction made Barton laugh heartily. "This is Backlund. It has its ugly side, but it also has its beautiful side."

He said, "Congratulations, Young Man. Because of your excellent performance, you earned more than 60 Pounds. You should know that many members of the middle class are not as wealthy as you are now."

After leaving Barton's office, Hobart was still somewhat excited. So this was Backlund? It could leave someone penniless overnight, but in the same amount of time, it could turn an Ordinary person into a Tycoon.

As he thought about it, Hobart gradually calmed down. He suddenly realized that such a society was actually terrifying. Once there were too many examples of overnight wealth, people would inevitably always want shortcuts, always want to gamble, and stake their entire fortunes on some investment.

He still had many things to do: summarize the Lawyer's Code, further explore the Country of Disorder, find a way to completely lift the family Curse, determine why he had transmigrated, and why he had such a close connection to the Country of Disorder.

In this Beyonder World, strength was what truly mattered!

As Hobart reflected on how he had nearly been blinded by money, he began reviewing his gains from this period in his mind.

There was still not the slightest sign of the Lawyer's Code, but he had gained a deeper understanding of the Lawyer's abilities.

In Hobart's view, the Lawyer's abilities mainly consisted of two parts: finding weaknesses and twisting thoughts.

Finding weaknesses was a very useful Extraordinary Ability. Against most Sequence 9 and below, it was easy to find the opponent's weakness.

Twisting thoughts, however, was not as useful as he had imagined. Based on Hobart's experiments over the past few days, the main way to twist another person's thoughts was through eloquence, and it could not obviously go against their existing ideas.
