Watching Audrey leave in her carriage, Hobart returned to the terrace. Unfortunately, the tea had already gone cold.
Audrey had been through a great deal today, but the Spectator pathway had one advantage: its Beyonders rarely suffered emotional fluctuations or problems because of life's experiences. There was no need to worry about her condition.
Hobart knew that Audrey needed some time to think these matters through on her own.
Just as he was about to have the servants bring him a fresh pot of tea, Hobart suddenly heard a prayer coming from the Country of Disorder.
He first returned to the Study and entered the Country of Disorder.
In the pool before Hobart, an unfamiliar star was flickering.
Yet the instant he saw that star, Hobart knew whom it represented. He extended his spirituality toward it and found Xue, who looked somewhat uneasy.
The investigation into the two Aurora Society members had concluded. Xue had submitted her report to the Creator through prayer.
The timing was perfect.
In a rich voice, Hobart said, "Give it to Hobart!"
Then he withdrew his spirituality and observed through the swelling star. Xue froze for a second or two before promptly putting away the documents, throwing on her coat, and heading out.
Hobart returned to the real world, had the servants replace the tea, and waited on the terrace for over half an hour before Xue finally arrived.
Xue still liked wearing men's clothing, which made her movements more nimble. Combined with her somewhat youthful face, she looked like a seventeen- or eighteen-year-old boy.
"No need to be so reserved." Hobart smiled. "I'm still me. Still the same Hobart."
But Xue said, "It's different. You're already an earl now. You're no longer that trainee lawyer who went to the East End to investigate cases."
