Watching the blazing red flames illuminate half the town's sky, Anvis suddenly had a feeling.
He sensed that the person he had come to find was there, at the fire.
So, he changed direction and headed toward the blaze... The flickering, somewhat dazzling firelight shone through the eyelids of the town militiaman on night watch in the wooden guard tower at the town gate, jolting him awake.
He stared blankly toward the fire, blinked twice, and finally realized what was happening. He immediately began frantically pulling the alarm bell.
"Clang—clang—clang—"
"Fire! Put it out!"
The town's residents woke from their sleep. Seeing the raging flames soaring into the night sky, they hurriedly began searching for buckets and basins, rushing to the town well for water to fight the fire.
The cold winter night was the time when God of the North Wind Kalashtar reigned.
Strong, dry north winds from deep within the Ancient Mountains blew through the town as if they would never cease.
If the flames could not be put out quickly, then in winds like these,
the blaze would likely ignite the nearby dry shrubs, weeds, and even other houses.
