Surprise God Breaks the Limit (Double Chapter)
By late afternoon, more than half the candidates in each examination hall had already left. Those remaining could only sit and wait, their emotions shifting from nervous anticipation to anxious restlessness, then to confusion and exhaustion.
Although the day-long examination tested their stamina, that was not much of a challenge for the candidates present. The real issue was the mental drain, which was tormenting.
Chen Chuan only went out to stretch during breaks. Unlike the others, he had mastered the Breathing Method. As long as he guided his breathing a little before the examination officially began, he could quickly enter the proper state.
As candidates were called out one after another, the number of people in the hall visibly dwindled. The female teacher was no longer as stern as she had been at the beginning. Instead, she stood by the entrance, silently watching outside, seemingly lost in thought.
The remaining candidates finally relaxed somewhat and began talking among themselves.
"Ah, it's gotten so late. My sister is still waiting for me outside. Who knows how much longer she'll have to wait?"
"Brothers, once this is over, whether we pass or fail, I'll treat everyone to a meal at a restaurant. We've made it into Wu Yi Academy, after all. We should celebrate."
"By the way, Han something-or-other, your family runs a restaurant, right? You said you'd give us half off?"
The chubby boy said with a grin, "That's right, but it's a bit far, so not tonight. Everyone's welcome to visit our Han Family Restaurant during the day. Those who pass the second round eat free, and those who don't get half off. Heh heh."
"For that meal, watch me pass for you!"
Just then, the female teacher saw an assistant examination teacher signal to her. Knowing that the previous batch of candidates had finished, she took out her list again, turned around, and called, "Number 401, Number 16, Number 18, proceed to Examination Site One; Number 392..."
Fifteen candidates immediately stood up, including several who had been chatting. They hurriedly grabbed their belongings and ran toward the examination sites.
Less than seven or eight minutes later, a chaotic burst of footsteps suddenly sounded outside, along with startled cries. Several candidates near the exit stood and crowded toward the windows and door to look outside.
Fang Zhiming put down his materials and asked blankly, "What happened?"
The female teacher suddenly went to the doorway to look, then turned back and said sternly, "Everyone, return to your seats. The examination is suspended." She had an assistant teacher keep watch over the room while she hurried out herself.
"What's going on?"
"I think a candidate at Examination Site Five is gone..."
"D-dead?"
The candidates felt a chill run through their hearts, gripped by fear. Injuries were understandable, but hearing that a candidate had suddenly died was deeply shocking to them, though such incidents had happened before.
"The examiner at Examination Site Five should be that guy called Zhong Wu, right? Since someone died, the academy should replace him, shouldn't they?"
"Right, right. They'll definitely replace him."
"Good. That's great."
When Chen Chuan heard "Examination Site Five," he thought for a moment. Judging from the numbers called earlier, the person sent there should have been...
He looked toward a seat, where several restaurant flyers still remained, along with an abandoned bag of beef jerky.
In Examination Hall Three, Committee Member Jiang was seated at an examination site. He had just watched a candidate spar with a senior student and was waiting for the examiners' scores when his assistant approached and whispered several words into his ear.
Committee Member Jiang immediately paid attention and asked, "What do the chief examiners think?"
"The chief examiners believe... he should be replaced. The student responsible for the accident should also receive a certain punishment afterward, and the candidate's family should be given sufficient compensation..."
Committee Member Jiang frowned. "That is not an appropriate way to handle this. Anyone who applies is considered to have voluntarily signed a liability waiver. The students conducting the examinations are under great pressure too. Losing control is not uncommon. Why replace him? If we handle it this way, what will the other examination students think? Will they still be able to perform normally? Will we still be able to assess the candidates' true abilities?"
The assistant said awkwardly, "But the chief examiners..."
Committee Member Jiang stood. "I'll go see them immediately." The assistant quickly stepped aside. "This way, Committee Member. The chief examiners are all in the conference room now..."
Ten minutes later, Committee Member Jiang appeared in the conference hall of Examination Hall Four. As soon as he entered, he said to Gao Shi and the other chief examiners, "I heard that you intend to revoke that student's qualification to conduct examinations?"
Yue Hong said, "Yes. We are discussing the matter. This student, Zhong Wu, caused a candidate's death by striking too heavily. Even if it was accidental, we cannot allow him to continue serving as an examination student."
Committee Member Jiang immediately rejected this. "I don't think that is appropriate. It would harm that student too much, and it would also be a blow to the other examination students."
After a brief pause, he added, "I happen to know something about this student named Zhong Wu. He is already serving as a Security Consultant for the Bureau of General Affairs, and after graduation, he will become a private consultant for a certain council member. He is an exceptionally outstanding talent. If this matter is handled that way, it will leave a stain on his record. We must also take care of exceptional talents. And if this matter is blown up too much, how will the Government Affairs Hall view the students produced by our Wu Yi Academy?"
Some of the teachers present were very dissatisfied with his argument, but they knew that this was not really about one student. Committee Member Jiang did not truly want to stand up for Zhong Wu. The root of the conflict was that, as the commissioning party, he wanted to wrest control of the second-round examination from them, the administrators.
Yue Hong spoke in rebuttal. "The examination students need consideration, but don't the candidates deserve consideration as well? The examination students' feelings need to be considered, but don't the candidates' feelings need to be considered as well?"
Committee Member Jiang looked at him in surprise, as if astonished that he would say such a thing.
Yue Hong still wanted to say more, but Gao Shi stopped him and said, "The examination is still ongoing. Since Committee Member Jiang insists, we can discuss Student Zhong Wu's punishment after the examination. For now, we will not revoke his qualification as an examination student. However, every examination he conducts from this point onward must be carried out under the joint supervision of both sides."
Committee Member Jiang knew that the chief examiners would not yield any further. He looked at Gao Shi, then softened his tone. "Chief Gao's proposal is reasonable enough. I accept it."
Gao Shi looked sternly at everyone present. "Those who have work to do, go do it. The rest of you, come with me to Examination Site Five."
Inside Examination Hall Four, Chen Chuan walked to the window and silently looked ahead. At Examination Site Five, three medical personnel pushed out a stretcher. A figure lay upon it, covered from head to toe, with only some hair still exposed.
The atmosphere was oppressive for a while. The candidates around him sighed, but more of them were worried about the upcoming examination, hoping that the student at that site would be replaced.
After a while, the female teacher returned from the examination site. In a voice a little more subdued than before, she said, "All candidates, return to your original positions. The examination will continue."
"What? They're not replacing him?"
"They can't be serious, right?"
"Look at the notice board."
The candidates looked toward the notice board at the examination sites. Nothing had changed, indicating that no replacement had been made. Everyone looked uneasy, afraid that they too would be assigned to that site.
Chen Chuan returned and sat in his original seat, his gaze becoming incomparably calm.
The examination continued. But as it went on, the first candidate chose to withdraw from the second round because he had been assigned to Examination Site Five.
After all, they had already passed the initial examination. Even if they failed the second round, they would still be students of Wu Yi Academy. They did not want to risk their lives too.
And once there was a first, there was a second. After several rounds, the female teacher's voice sounded again. "Number 96, Number 398, Number 421, proceed to Examination Site Five..."
Fang Zhiming shuddered all over because it was his turn this time. "I..." Then he saw Chen Chuan stand directly and head toward the examination site. Not far away, another candidate said, "I'm not taking it. I withdraw." A boy then packed up his things, lowered his head, and walked out the door.
Chen Chuan did not even turn his head.
Fang Zhiming hesitated. Seeing Chen Chuan walk over, he gritted his teeth and followed. If Chen Chuan dared to go, why shouldn't he? If he did not give it a try, he would never be reconciled to it!
The remaining candidates in the hall stared at the two of them in astonishment. They dared? Did they not care about their lives?
As Chen Chuan stepped out through the doors, he passed by the female teacher. She suddenly felt goosebumps rise across her skin, and every muscle in her body tensed. Then she abruptly turned her head and stared intently at Chen Chuan's retreating back.
Chen Chuan did not stop walking. His steps were especially steady, yet each one seemed incredibly heavy. When he reached the end of the corridor, he glanced at the notice board beside him, then reached out and pushed open the two thick doors.
Before him was a spacious examination hall. Two rows of long tables stood on either side of the open floor. Committee Member Jiang sat in the middle on the right side of the venue, with his assistant and a teacher responsible for communication beside him.
Opposite Committee Member Jiang sat Gao Shi. Yue Hong and Bian Feng, the lecturer who had once admitted him, sat to either side, along with several other teachers. Some assistants stood nearby, while medical personnel waited not far from the entrance. At that moment, several people were looking at him with shock, regret, and sympathy.
In the center of the venue stood a senior student over two meters tall. His build was bloated and broad, immensely solid. He seemed to have grown sideways, like a huge water vat filled to the brim. When he stood there, the floor itself seemed compressed beneath him.
His shoulder and back muscles were so thick that his neck seemed almost nonexistent. His eyes were reduced to narrow slits, and beneath his massive arms were hands of astonishing size, large enough to envelop an ordinary person's head with a casual grasp.
Fang Zhiming followed behind and was immediately frightened. Before seeing this person, he could not imagine what kind of man he was. But upon seeing him in person, Fang Zhiming regretted coming along. Yet he had already come, and there was no backing out now. He gritted his teeth and forced himself to stand straight.
An examiner said, "Only two candidates came? Number 398, come up for your examination first."
Yue Hong reminded him, "Candidate, to avoid accidents, we advise you to wear protective gear."
Fang Zhiming immediately agreed. Even if he could not fight back, he could at least exchange a few moves, right? He went aside and put on every piece of protective gear before stepping in front of Zhong Wu.
At sixteen, he had only grown to one meter seventy. The difference in height and build between the two was stark.
Only then did Fang Zhiming truly feel the other man's pressure. Feeling the heat radiating from that massive body, his mouth immediately went dry. Then he heard the other man say in a muffled voice, "Hello, classmate. My name is Zhong Wu."
Fang Zhiming took a deep breath and tried his best to state his name steadily. "Fang Zhiming."
The moment the two stood together, the examination began. Fang Zhiming decided to strike first, or he feared he would have no chance at all. With a shout, he punched Zhong Wu in the abdomen, then followed with more than a dozen consecutive punches. Yet every blow felt like it landed on a taut rubber ball, and Zhong Wu showed no reaction whatsoever.
Fang Zhiming looked up and saw Zhong Wu lowering his head to look at him. "Oh? You've started?" Zhong Wu reached out to grab him. Fang Zhiming hurriedly dodged, but those hands were simply too large. They looked slow, but were actually fast. One hand swept sideways and seized his arm.
"I-I surrender..." Fang Zhiming realized something was wrong and immediately shouted. Yet Zhong Wu seemed not to hear him at all. He lifted Fang Zhiming one-handed like a chick, drawing a terrified scream from him.
"Stop!"
Yue Hong stood and shouted sternly, "Stop." He stared at Zhong Wu. "He has already surrendered."
Zhong Wu narrowed his eyes, then released his hand. Fang Zhiming fell to the ground, clutching his arm in pain. Zhong Wu scratched his head and said in a dull, seemingly honest voice, "Sorry, Examiner. I didn't hear him just now. Sorry. Sorry, classmate." His enormous body then bowed toward the front.
Fang Zhiming immediately sensed a huge shadow descending over him, covering his entire body. He could not help shrinking back. Enduring the piercing pain, he said tremblingly, "I-it's fine..." Then he felt that body slowly straighten, and light returned above his head.
Yue Hong shook his head and sat back down.
The examiners remained silent. Injuries to candidates were common during examinations. Since the candidate himself said he could accept it, they had no grounds to criticize Zhong Wu over this.
Bian Feng stared deeply at Zhong Wu. He had clearly killed a candidate through negligence just moments ago, and now he was pulling this again. Either he truly had something missing in his head, or he had no fear of consequences. But if it were truly the former, he would not have been accepted into the Mutual Aid Society and become one of its members.
The medical personnel immediately stepped forward to examine Fang Zhiming. Fortunately, it was only a dislocated arm, with no other serious injury. After offering a few words of reassurance, they quickly took him away.
The examiner looked at Chen Chuan. "Candidate Number 421, it's your turn."
Chen Chuan walked forward under everyone's gaze. Seeing him approach, Zhong Wu greeted him as usual. "Hello, classmate. My name is Zhong Wu."
Chen Chuan said nothing and slowly walked before Zhong Wu. He did not look up, so Zhong Wu could not see his expression. But since Chen Chuan had stepped before him, the examination had begun.
Zhong Wu directly reached out with both hands to seize Chen Chuan.
Although he looked foolishly honest, he possessed an unusual sensitivity that allowed him to judge an opponent's strength by instinct. Chen Chuan gave him a faint sense of danger, so he did not underestimate him in the slightest. As he grabbed out with both hands, he used the Wrestling Embrace Force that he had never once used since beginning his examination duties.
As long as he got a firm hold of his opponent, the force would penetrate their body, instantly robbing them of all resistance and leaving them at his mercy. Moreover, at the instant he unleashed that force, it would spread through most of his body, leaving almost no openings.
Chen Chuan seemed not to see his movements. He stood there without any reaction. The examiners watching grew tense, prepared to intervene and halt the examination at any moment.
At that moment, Chen Chuan seemed unable to sense anything around him. Only his opponent remained before him. As the two huge hands reached for him, just as the fingertips were about to touch his shoulders, light flared in his eyes. The Second Self instantly merged with him. He raised his knee and kicked skyward!
That kick contained all his strength, and he used the Limit Breaking Strike without regard for the cost. In an instant, nearly every muscle in his body was strained, but at the same moment, the Second Self absorbed all the damage.
Zhong Wu's massive body gave him greater strength, but his nerve signals could never travel as quickly as Chen Chuan's. Even if their reactions had been equal, the Second Self's multiplied enhancement gave Chen Chuan enough speed that Zhong Wu could not react. Thus, the kick struck Zhong Wu squarely beneath the jaw.
However, because the Wrestling Embrace Force was spread throughout Zhong Wu's body, even the explosive power of the Limit Breaking Strike only left him slightly dazed. Even so, his previously fluid movements paused. Though his hands had already nearly fallen upon Chen Chuan, he was unable to release his force smoothly. He instinctively began adjusting his breathing, preparing to exert strength again. After countless repetitions in training, this was only an extremely brief opening.
But between the moment his force was about to emerge and the moment it did, Chen Chuan's second kick arrived! With the Second Self merged into him, Chen Chuan displayed speed beyond human limits. Before Zhong Wu's body had fully reacted, before his thoughts had even begun to turn, Chen Chuan's kick had already struck behind his ear!
Under the impact of the Surprise God Fist's power, it was as if a thunderclap exploded inside Zhong Wu's head, causing the physically solid giant to lose consciousness on the spot.
Committee Member Jiang was speaking with someone beside him, instructing his assistant to arrange dinner that evening. He paid no attention to the fight, because there was nothing left to watch. But then he heard an explosive bang.
"What was that sound?"
Committee Member Jiang turned around. Zhong Wu and Chen Chuan were still standing where they had begun, seemingly without moving at all. From his angle, Zhong Wu's hands were already resting on Chen Chuan's shoulders. A faintly mocking smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.
At that moment, Chen Chuan had already won. Yet he did not stop. Instead, he threw another kick upward! Then a fourth, a fifth, a sixth...
Zhong Wu's body, weighing over two hundred kilograms, should have fallen after losing the support of consciousness. But Chen Chuan's powerful kicks forcibly held him upright! Bang! Bang! Bang! Chen Chuan was moving so quickly that, aside from the chief examiners present, those without combat training—such as Committee Member Jiang and some of the medical personnel—even some assistant teachers with poorer eyesight could not see his legs move. They could only blankly hear one explosive crack after another from whipping kicks tearing through the hall!
After a little while, even Committee Member Jiang could see that something was wrong from Zhong Wu's rolled-back eyes and swaying, pendulum-like body.
The medical personnel panicked as well, hurriedly shouting, "Hey, stop! Stop!"
"Didn't you hear us? Stop already!"
Chen Chuan seemed not to hear them. He continued kicking again and again. Zhong Wu was now like a leaking sandbag, blood seeping from his eyes, ears, mouth, and nose.
Yet the teachers and instructors of Wu Yi Academy all remained silently seated. No one spoke to stop him.
Only when blood had flowed onto the floor, and countless droplets had splattered onto the tables on both sides, did Gao Shi finally speak. "Stop."
His voice was not loud, yet everyone present felt their chests vibrate with it.
Chen Chuan's movements paused. He allowed that massive body to pitch forward and crash heavily into the floor. Slowly lowering his leg, he straightened his slightly rumpled clothes, touched his collar, lowered his gaze, and calmly said to Zhong Wu lying there, "My name is Chen Chuan."
The examination hall fell silent for a moment. Only the rapid, heavy breathing of one person after another could be heard.
After quite some time, Committee Member Jiang finally reacted. He abruptly rose and demanded harshly, "Candidate, we told you to stop earlier. Didn't you hear us?!"
Chen Chuan turned around, looked at Committee Member Jiang, and calmly replied, "Sorry, I didn't hear you."
Hearing this, Committee Member Jiang narrowed his eyes and stared at Chen Chuan's face. "I think you did that deliberately!"
Chen Chuan said slowly, "Since the examiners did not stop me, the examination was considered to be proceeding normally. I remember that is part of the examination rules. It is also written on the notice board." He looked at the chief examiners seated there. "Is that correct?"
Gao Shi reached out, picked up Chen Chuan's file, and looked through it a few times. "Candidate Chen Chuan defeated the senior student responsible for the sparring examination. The process complied with the examination rules. No scoring is required. He may be directly judged to have passed."
Yue Hong immediately followed. "No objections. Passed!"
Bian Feng said in a deep voice, "Passed!"
"Passed!"
"Passed!"
"Passed!"
One examiner after another voiced their judgment without hesitation.
Committee Member Jiang could not help looking at everyone present, his gaze dark.
Yue Hong looked at Committee Member Jiang and urged, "Committee Member Jiang, please sign it. Of course, it is fine if you do not." He smiled. "Because if a candidate defeats the senior student responsible for the examination, that candidate is considered to have passed directly. That is Wu Yi Academy's rule."
Gao Shi said in a low voice, "That's right. That is Wu Yi Academy's rule."
Everyone in the examination hall looked toward Committee Member Jiang. Under the gazes of one powerful Wu University teacher after another, Committee Member Jiang himself was not visibly affected, but his assistant felt as if his heart would leap out of his chest. His back was drenched in cold sweat.
Committee Member Jiang's face darkened. He snatched the form from his assistant's trembling hands, took out a fountain pen, and signed it. He pressed so hard that the pen nib seemed about to puncture the paper.
He was angry not because Zhong Wu had been defeated, but because he had lost a round in his struggle against the administrators and had been forced to make a decision.
After signing, he tossed the pen onto the table and sat back with his arms crossed. Looking at Gao Shi and the others, he sneered inwardly. It was only one candidate passing. What use could one person possibly be? The rules of the world would never change because of one person.
Gao Shi then said, "Take him away." Only then did the medical personnel snap out of the tense atmosphere. They hurried forward, placed Zhong Wu on a stretcher, and pushed him away for treatment. The others quickly moved in to clean the examination hall and wipe away the blood around them.
Bian Feng said to Chen Chuan, "Student Chen, there is nothing more for you to do here. Go back, gather your things, and wait for the term to begin."
Chen Chuan turned to face everyone, bowed slightly, and said, "Thank you, teachers."
He then straightened, picked up his belongings, and left through a side door on the other side. He arrived at the outer corridor. As the sky had darkened, the lights inside the building and the lamps around the academy grounds had already come on.
He slowly left the examination hall and came beneath the boundless night sky. He looked up for a while, then reached into his pocket, took out the beef jerky, tore off the wrapper, put it in his mouth, and chewed slowly as he silently said to himself:
"It's delicious."
